I like mine on the roof better mainly because I don't want to be bothered with a swing arm every time I want to get in and out of the trunk

I don't care for the idea of raising my COG that much, I would stick with the swing out and work towards the rack.

the roof rack i think is more veratial. yeah it does suck having to get up there to change a tire but how often will you do that compared to opening the rear? i think a roof rack would win although i dont like the extra wind drag for the highway us.

the stock swing out isnt rated for bigger tires either. id go for the roof rack. i have both a roof basket and a heavy duty swingout. ive wheeled with a tire on the rack before and can fell it up there when side hilling.

Keep your tire carrier. If you want a full size spare and you have a lift it's perfect. You can always build a cheap roof rack for next to nothing, it might not be a yakima like you see on any of those gay priuses but it'll get the job done. I myself have a mopar roof backet thing that my dad gave me because he his lease on the GC he had was up so I got it for free. anyway, make one, they're cheap and easy like lindsay lohan.

I don't like the extra wieght up high either, but God only knows what my tire/wheel weight is (38TSL on 10" Allied Rock-a-thon) I have a nice swing out carrier, but only use it when a trip back to the tow rig is out of question, Like Aetna, Tellico (RIP), most parks it's not hard to get a ride out to pick up the spare.

Ive always wanted a rear tire carrier and I ended up mounting my spare to my stock luggage rack.
The weight, drag, and most of all the NOISE is irritating and annoying. Go with the rear tire carrier. Sleeker, out of the way, no drag, and no irritating hornet's nest sound off of the roof.

If I was lucky enough to have a factory tire, I would definitely keep it.
I just got a 30" spare and put it on my roof rack- it KILLED my mpg and the higher cog is noticeable in the corners.
Fortunately I found a k&n intake at a JY that fixed the mpg problem, and I probably need to take corners slower anyway.
that's my 2 cents.
