More info.
The center pic are a few ideas I have looking from a side view, going to go with the second from the left. I am using 1" square tubing 1/8" thick for the base and 1/16" thick for the upper portion. Tactical40cal, most of the design for the base came from the plans you had posted earlier, much appreciated!

Not yet, still needs to be welded up.. My father is a welder by trade and he and i were going to use this to improve my welding skills (currently NONE) together. Unfortunately he just had his vacuum lines replaced (Tripple bypass heart surgery... operation went great, now just time to heal!) and is back at his home in Spokane Wa. for the next couple of months. We are going to finish, just not as soon as planned. Not really in a hurry to get it done as it was always planned as a Grandfather (him) Son (me) and Grandson (my boy) project and it will be finished that way. I will def post pics when it is finished though.

Wood Slat Rack
So I bought an old girl, a 94 Grand Cherokee Limited from this older fella I know. He always took great care of it. The interior is mint and plush. It’s just a nice riding Jeep. It’s the classic hunter green with champagne trim. I can’t see “off roading” it so I’m trying to come up with ways to give it an old Grand Wagoneer (my favorite of the Jeep family) feel.
I have a full fab shop at my disposal and have been toying with some plans to build a steel roof basket but to also use wood slats - high poly gloss on the slats of course. Just wondering how this will look and if anyone’s seen it done on a Grand Cherokee? I’m envisioning something that’s almost like the old VW bus roof racks.
The first pic is my 94. The bottom pic is kinda, sorta what I’m thinking in terms of the slats. Though I plan on using light gauge square tubing for my frame with about 5 inch deep walls.

It's your jeep, so do with it what you will. Not sure how much it'll be visible since its a roof rack and not in a truck bed. but I'm sure it will be visible enough to tell its wood slats. If its for looks, I'd go 1/2" thick slats, if your going to load stuff on it, I'd go 1".... Just guessing though. Or go 1/2" and have more of the cross bars for support.... or something. Or build it all from scratch and build in the support I guess..
