Rear ladder

I want to see and hear how people make and mount these I want to put one on and I am going to but I have a stock jeep Cherokee 2000 and money is an issue

Tiberius 02-26-2011 06:54 PM

seems like it would be pretty straight forward. just mount it to the hatch and make it from 1" steel square tubing.

Ryankerins 02-26-2011 07:42 PM

Yea but like should I make a basket to go on to to hook it to

fathersNsons 02-26-2011 09:23 PM

rear ladder

Do not know what you had in mind but I was recently thinking of a rear ladder as well.

One point to consider is that my rear hatch is fiberglass, not sure about other years, (Ours is a 94) this made attaching it a much bigger issue.

I did find the attached:

for the money it seems ok. Unforunitly the way this one is mounted interferes with the overhang on my rack./

Hope this helps
good luck

send pics.

Hey thanks that does help alot I am thinking of the back hatch more but I was thinking about the side

How about getting a nice rear bumper with a tire mount. Use the mount as a step to access the roof rack. I just dont like ladders, reminds me of RV's.

If you want a ladder and don't want to make one or don't have a lot of money to by one like me go to a junkyard and find a full size van and get the ladder off the back of it that's what I'm going to do when I get a chance to go to the jy

I'd like to see pics of that when you get to it

Stupid question but here it goes how bout a rack should I build one find one or don't need it lol

Tiberius 02-28-2011 03:07 AM

if you want a ladder you'll probably want a rack for it to lead to.

a rear ladder wont be attached to the rack, just the hatch, or else it wouldn't let the hatch open.

lots of people build racks from EMT conduit for pretty cheap, lots of stuff in the fab section about that, you might be able to build a ladder from the conduit too, but idk, I like square tubing ladders and racks better personally

Ryankerins 02-28-2011 06:33 PM

No I actually I am 6 4 I just think thy look cool

kentuckyscott 02-28-2011 07:50 PM

Gobi makes a pretty cool rear ladder....you can find them on ebay.

91_Cherokee 03-01-2011 07:25 AM

I climb into mine by standing on the tire, and then the rear door handle (not with all my weight)
But I'm no spring chicken, so I will probably make some type of retractable ladder for mine. I like the conduit idea.

I saw someone mention earlier about you couldn't attach it to the rack, I don't have a ladder on my XJ but, I think you could make one and make a hinge set up where it would move with the back hatch or do like a set up where you could take it on and off easily like a trailer with ramps where they just slide on to the hinge..if yall understand that?

Yea you know thats not a bad idea. I think though that if you had the top hinged and the bottom bolted to the hatch, it wouldn't open all the way because it is fixed to the bottom of the hatch. I like the idea where it could slide up via the hinge, that way you could pull it down when you need it.

97-01 xj's have steel gates I believe.

countryboynance 03-01-2011 01:17 PM

I though that as well unless you made it where the hinge was kinda like an oval and the ladder could slide through it if you get what i'm saying? Kinda sounds far fetched I guess but, anythings possible. or you could have it where it would slide up under your roof rack when not needed and then just slide it out when you wanted it...just a random thought? :dunno: But, it would have to have a locking mechanism and your rack as far back as possible or just longer than hello! lol

Not going to be a happy camper if I have to clean this thread up again. Stay on topic guys and this is the tech section. if you flame this thread again infractions will be given.

And I have seen a few ladder mounted to the rack. the way the did it was:

mount to the rack using a hinge (2 piece of flat stock on either side of the square tube ladder with a hitch pin so it was removable when need be)

then on the hatch they did not mount it directly to the hatch but rather had a rubber foot, it was a piece of flat stock mounted between both rails that had a nice thick rubber pad on it. It just rested against the hatch and distributed the weight. Looked good to.

Last i heard he used some C channel and used a spring to where he could clamp it on the bottom of the hatch (so he could leave it on and not worry about it bouncing around on the trail) but still have the option to remove it

Tiberius 03-02-2011 12:09 AM

I would build one, then either bolt to my hatch, or give it a lip on top that fits in the gap between roof and hatch, and keep it under or attached to the rack when not in use.

countryboynance 03-03-2011 02:46 PM

Also one other "ghetto" idea lol If you wanted a ladder but, didn't like the look or wanted to be sarcastic or really cheap, get a rope ladder! lol just hook it to the rack with the climbing type hooks and then un-hook it when your done or don't want it up though it would lay dead against the hatch and your feet wouldn't really fit on it...haha Just a really random thought?

jcwclm 03-03-2011 04:04 PM

If you want it attatched to the roof rack you could make a sliding mechanism on the gate so when you open the gate it can move.

this company has a cool set up, very pricey but maybe it will give you some ideas
