I think he's going more for get your own steel and trace out the parts from the template type of deal. Could be wrong. You're right though if it's a pack of pre-cut parts and instructions it would definitely be over $500.

That would cut down on shipping and insurance liability I would hope. Knowing insurance companies though they'll just say there's more risk because I'm not controlling the final product quality. It's such a racket.

I guess my problem would be having someone else put it together crappy and telling everyone it was the design or the kit that sucked and not their fab work.

Thanks for the idea though. It's good to have another way to look at it. I hadn't really given that much thought.

I was talking about shipping a box full of cardboard cutouts that the buyer would trace onto steel they picked up at their local supplier. The only steel in the box might be the hinge and the latch.

Anyone that even somewhat knows their backside from a hole in the ground should be able to recognize shoddy work instead of a flawed design. Then again, maybe I place my faith in other people too high.

They walk among us.

Yeah, you would hope people could see that but you never know. Or the builder just says it's a Rock Solid Off-Road bumper and leaves out the part that they did it themselves.

I don't know. It's all just something I'm kicking around right now. I may just keep on selling other peoples stuff and never go any where with it. It's a lot less headache but I do love to build stuff. Of course I love building wooden stuff too but after I spent 10 years as a remodeling contractor/cabinet maker I have a hard time getting excited about doing that anymore.

I do appreciate everyone's constructive input on this. I wasn't sure when I through out the numbers if I would get a good response, a bunch of "you're freaking nuts" comments or just radio silence. Thanks.

I would advice not depending on the installer. We can see the quality is great, even buying a made bumper from you still has it's installer flaws. I wouldn't sell or worry of any possibility until the insurance company has you backed up. "Stupid is what stupid does" not everyone with a credit card is competent to weld or even install a bumper.

Yep, probably still jack the insurance up and I'd need some kind of errors and omissions policy on top of what I already have to cover design work. Insurance companies are like politicians. They always have a loop hole so you lose.

I know what I have in it time wise and of course this one also includes a lot of design time so it's only going to take less time in the future once I get the details worked out a bit. I know I could do a lot of things to make it more production worthy too like getting the main section cut and bent instead of welding 16' of steel and grinding it smooth (yes I welded it inside too so grinding the outside wouldn't ruin it).

So on our site we have Smittybilt at $749.99, Hanson at $1,197.99 and MORE at $1,545.99. I'd like to say we'd be somewhere closer to the upper two in quality and overall design and therefore probably at least at the price of the Hanson.

This is all totally hypothetical at this point. I'm still just kicking the idea around and after talking to our insurance agent about what manufacturing would do to our liability rates (DOUBLE! ) I'm trying to get a feel for if it would be worth it or not to even try.

I highly doubt I could do them as one offs and keep the cost under the $1,200-1,500 range. In small batches they'd still be more of a semi-custom item than a production part.

So the question is, at that price would you still say you'd buy it?

Thanks.
Did you end up fabricating them for sale? If so, how much and where can I buy one? I've been looking for a rear bumper w/tire carrier where the spare sits super close to the hatch due to my garage being so small. Most tire carriers out there have the spare flying way out there. Yours looks like it may be just what I need. Thanks

I'd love to say yes but unfortunately I fell a few months ago and completely dislocated my shoulder. I never got a chance to work out the final design or make any improvements on this. I'm just now getting back to being able to work in the shop and I'm playing catch up for all I couldn't do.

Sorry but I don't see it happening in the near future. Thanks for your interest though.
