Question Newbie Making Jeep XJ Lift Step Ups??

How hard hard would it be to make my own "steps" for my 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ? The bars that go on the side kinda thing.

This is what I am looking to make

I would not consider buying these pre-made because of the step price tag of 322.99. http://www.quadratec.com/products/71207_800_07.htm
And also because I want to try my hand at fabrication, and learn to weld maybe. It doesn't look to hard honestly, but then again I have never welded before in my life.

I do have access to my grandfathers 3 car workshop with a lot of automotive tools, mostly used for restoring a"1910 Model-T" and but some of the stuff is used for general maintenance on cars and tractors, like 80s Mercedes, Buicks, 1950s ford tractors, and minor work on my Jeep. The shop is pretty much equipped with,
Wrenches/Sockets both kinds and various different types.
Enough screwdrivers and bits to supply a freakin army
A ton of drill bits
A jack
Various automotive tools, mostly for antique cars
Various automotive paints, fluids and chemicals
Drill press
Grinding wheels
Wire brush on a motor
Buffer
Acetylene and Oxeygen welder, with the proper mask/goggles/gloves/apron
Various pieces of steel and other metals
Clamps
Cutoff wheel
Various drills
Engine lift
Engine dolly
Compressor with various tools, socket driver, cutting wheel, ETC
A whole bookcase with various organized nuts and bolts and screws
Other everyday general workshop stuff
The Acetylene/Oxygen welding setup, is used mostly for brazing brass for "Model T" parts, but he said it is capable of welding, but he hasn't really done it much himself. I have never welded before, and I am strapped for cash pretty much, I would love to do it myself because it looks to be a pretty simple fabrication.

How hard would this be for a newbie? I know that tools are no substitute for a pure skill, but I want to at least learn.

if you can weld you can make it, just draw up the set up what you want it to look like then get your supplies and go at it

check out jcroffroad.com they have rock sliders that serve as steps as well and even if you dont buy them you could get ideas how to make some of your own, also rusty's offroad makes some too

if youve never welded before DO NOT try to weld to the unibody rails as this could be very bad for your jeeps integrity. otherwise throw something together and bolt it on. like it hate it chop it up and repeat. if your gonna make steps you might as well make them somewhat strong to protect your rockers

I do not plan on directly welding them on, there are two holes for bolts that look about large enough to me. Now the only thing I have to do is find the scrap metal to do it with?
