Default my new airbox

I am getting ready to do my cowl snorkel and decided that I wanted to get rid of the factory airbox for something a little more appropriate...

So I went junkyard hunting and found this. It was in the back of a Windstar, I assume it is off the same van.

Disassembled, I ended up with this

Remove the two 10mm bolts holding the mass air sensor onto the plate in the middle. Cut all of the tabs and stuff off of the plate, just leave the circular parts on each side

Take a factory airbox lid (I had a spare) and cut the outlet off at 2". cut 4 1/2" deep slots all in it. One on each mold seam and then half way in between these. this keeps the factory evap port intact and it will hook right back up once I extend the hard line.

Take the side of the box that held the mass air sensor and cut it down to just a ring that will hold the center plate in place

I then took the airbox side that holds the filter and opened the outlet end up to 3". I forgot to take a pic of this, but it's pretty self explanatory.

I then took a piece I bought at Walmart that is made for a 3" RV sewer connection

And cut it down to this

Size: 95.0 KB

I then pressed it through the opening in the box from the inside.

Assembled and sat in place where it will be once I get a new filter to go in it. I will be getting another of the sewer couplers for the firewall end. I will cut it down the same way and press it through from the backside of the cowl. I will be using a piece of the 3" sewer hose as well...

That look awesome. I might do that. But the filter seen small. Is it enough to not restrict air flow? Otherwise it look good.

the filter is bigger than the cone filters a lot of people use. these same setups are used on 4.2 windstars as well as late model 4.0 explorers and rangers, so it should flow enough air. plus I opened up the opening, so more air should be able to get into the housing than normal

The kid is my 4 year old. He was coming to tell me that his bicycle helmet was full of grass clippings.

You beat me to it! Haha I was going to do the same thing to mine. Doing oil changes everyday gives you a lot of ideas from other vehicles. And that should be awesome.

Definitely have to put up some pics of it installed

an f150, expedition, or econoline has the same type setup as well, just considerably larger, wasn't sure if I would be able to fit it

Are you going to run it up on the driver side or go over the motor and run it into the passenger side?

Yeah. That size should be enough. For some reason, it looked smaller in the pictures. Great idea
