My 1996 XJ rear bumper build. With swing out spare tire.
I had 2 goals on this build.
1. Make it solid and sturdy so it can take a hit and work as a secure pull point.
2. Incorperate a tire carrier that opens fast and easy, withought the hinge blocking the tail lights, or the swing arm sticking out past the bumper surface.
It is made of 3" square tube. 3/16" wall.
The mounts also use 3" c-channel, and the bumper uses a spindle hinge from AtoZ fabrication.
Rear bumper mounts with [12] bolts. [8] factory at stock location and [4] 1/2" grade 8's
along the unibody trailer hitch mounts.
Added pull points. Also from AtoZ fabrication.
Latch is a 180 degree cam lock off the back of a wrecker. Spring loaded.

Thanx for your comments. I am happy to see there are a few people out there that like my work.
I don't do much towing with this jeep, so thats why it doesnt have a trailer hitch. however when I lift it in the spring, I was thinking of adding one just to give the gas tank a little more protection in case of a rear end collision "by dropping the bumper hight".

You should sell those, they'd be perfect for people with LPG conversions (very common in the UK) who have their toroid tank in the space where the spare usually lives.

When I first mounted the bumper I had a slight rattle in it over bumps. When I installed the tire, I also added a small section of rubber roofing between the swingout arm and main section of bumper. I am shure the weight of the bumper took out allot of the rattle, But with the section of rubber "which you cant see in the photo's, but it is in there" took 100% of the rattle out of it! I plan on drilling and tapping 2 holes on the back side of the arm so that I can secure the rubber perminately to hang like a mudflap and cusion between the tubes when closed. I had figured a rattle in the origional design, but I was going to origionaly secure a bushing from the back side.
Now I am looking forward to mounting my front bumper off my 1990 XJ on the 1996.
