Hydro Assist mount
Adding West Texas Off-road hydro assist steering. The ram fits almost perfect in the stock stabilizer bracket but I need to reinforce it so this is what I did. |
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a994595cc.jpegThis is factory. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...976bb5eab.jpegHolds up incredibly well for heavy sheet metal! |
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c4041339e.jpegStarted by cutting this chunk out. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...f61c4a94c.jpegCleaned up the surfaces. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...7eb91911f.jpegUsed more cad design! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...d906549d7.jpegAnd cut the piece out of 1/4” plate. |
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...fa661cb74.jpegI utilized the mounting tabs from the kit. Since the stabilizer mount is at an angle from the track bar mount, I needed a shelf to mount the tab. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...b2f93a716.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3c37e968f.jpeg |
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...419835b4a.jpegI decided to tie in this area for more strength. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...bf0da9b30.jpegLike this. |
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...42d1879a7.jpegThe inner mount was more tricky. Cut a piece like this. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ea5f0f38b.jpegFits into the mount like this https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ff5a2cd49.jpegAnd welded it in. I added a couple washers tacked on for spacers. |
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...2b6753c2a.jpegThen I fully welded in the rest. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...fa6d52bf2.jpegThink it turned out ok. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...1b861b48f.jpegI ran outta time tonight, but I’ll add a small piece here to gusset it al together. |
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...91464b9d1.jpegDecided it would be better to reinforce at the back of the mount. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...03170eea5.jpegDid the normal CAD pattern, and cut out this piece. It needed a slight bend for the angle to work but since this is 3/16” plate I was able to do it with a hammer in the bench vise. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...19f0bc8e3.jpegThen welded it in. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...015c70b2d.jpegNo project is done until it’s got bedliner on it! “I put that s**t on everything!” 🤣 |
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...7c7faba2c.jpegRan into a bit of clearance issue. With my stock type steering setup, the drag link was hitting my bracket. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...660664648.jpegSo I had to cut about 1/4” off and taper it to the left. If I were to do this again I’d raise the shelf 1/4-3/8” higher and the steering would have cleared. Live and learn... |
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...df91321d1.jpegSo, I’m gonna get a lot of grief for this but I decided to try the hydro steer setup on my stockish steering. I do have the ZJ V8 tierod so we’ll see how it holds up. This is the bracket I built to attach the ram to the draglink. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...374e63651.jpegI don’t have build pics but I used a steering stabilizer stud with the straight wall end cut off, drilled and welded it into a 5/16” plate piece, then welded the tabs to it. On the other side I put another set of tabs and fashioned a cam bolt at arrangement so I could tighten the bracket snug against the drag link. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...b4ba37346.jpegI’m curious to see how this holds up. Not the brackets, but the steering linkage itself. I’ll report back after a trail run. |
i'll be curious about that will hold up. get in a bind and the ram may overpower the strength of the draglink and bend it.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...bcee1f950.jpegGot it all mounted up and plumbed. Drives great! It really does act as a super steering damper 😋 don’t feel any bumps in the steering wheel! https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...451f3ca5c.jpegThe boost is nice at slow speeds. Heading out for a week long off road adventure the end of June. I’ll report back on how it held up and worked. |
