Homebrew Overhead Console

5 Attachment(s)
I started my overhead console build today. I started by removing my stereo and extending the wires so that I could put my stereo up overhead.
I made a template so that I could transfer the shape of the roof and windshield so that I could contour it. Cut out the pieces of plywood.

screwed everything together. The bracket that held the old console in place was scrapped, and I just used the mounting hole and screws to hold the new one up.

I know it looks like crap now but it is *NOT FINISHED*, but it is in for now, I have a few days worth of driving and don't want to go without tunes for too long. I will take it down, cover it with fleece, and eventually fiberglass it.

Sorry for the darkness of the pics (its super bright out today) I will go out later on tonight and take pics with my flash so as not to be back lit!

not to bad is tht going to hold a cb and stereo or what?

DJKnightmare 02-21-2010 03:23 PM

alwaysxj - Its not terribly far down. What I do like about it hanging low in the front is that on sunny days, it covers the open area above the mirror.

Its the stereos head unit, and above that is the dvd player.

nice work DJ cant wait to see it all done

DJKnightmare 02-21-2010 03:30 PM

Thank you,

The long empty section behind the electronics might hold a flip down for the back seat, and some overhead lights....which I don't currently have.

Looking good... for future referance.. try gorilla glue or titebond.. eather one will do job better then screws... the gorialla glue stuf is the chits.. will glue just about anything to anything.. but they do make it for wood.. titebond is good mainly just for wood.. screws work to ofcourse.. but glue is very strong..and if you really want to make it look nice with a wood finish...i made this with brazillian cherry..maybe 20 bucks in wood.. the guage pods.. are made from about 40 peaces cut glued and sanded..started out as a flat peace of wood stock.
this is the dash i made for my last car.. 90 supra
trust me.. glue better and neater.. and stronger

no it does not hang down that far it must of just been the close up pic that made it look like it hung down really far. looks good keep up the work.

DJKnightmare 02-21-2010 04:01 PM

WOW Hommer, crazy dash! Thats awesome.

*off topic* was your Supra one of those crazy turbo monsters? I love Supras!

i like both of them. would like to put one in mine but would like move the visor's and carry it all the way across the front for hold other things. i figured about 3" from roof should be enough. one pocket on drivers side and one on the passenger side with one like what you did through the center to hold cb and stereo.

beautiful work homer that looks real classy. almost as classy as the plastic shelving units holding up your workbench. j/k
