no, they bolt in under the bumper brackets. the brackets move out only 1/4in per side. They also double as a brace for the steering box

C'mon! I can't believe any of you think this is safe!
They're butt welded to a little plate.
That weak weld breaks and that thing turns into a missle.
I'll never been anywhere near those things when they're getting pulled on.
Scary.
The least you could do is add a huge fische plate down the side of that thing.

If that is the case then they're fine.
If that was originally 3 seperate plates then that's dangerous. I'd like the see the original plate before any welding.

using 3/16" plate as the tie in, and assuming 3 layers of 3/16" plate, welded both sides with a 3/16" fillet weld, you're looking at a weld capacity of over 12,000 lb loaded perpendicular to the weld line, and that's being conservative. I assure you the D-rings and his strap are weaker than that and will break first.

I've been known to make a mistake in the past... I could be wrong.
Again, I'd like to see it before welding.
