flip up spare tire carrier build
i have been trying to find a place to fit my 36 inch tsl spare in my chopped cherokee for a while. i have had lots of ideas but they all had major downsides.
first idea was tire carrier on the bumper. i didnt like this because # 1 it would cover up my cool jeep tailgate and #2 i dont like it when tires hang off your bumpers because the the tire is the first thing that gets hit if u back into something and often does more damage.
second is roof mount. i didnt like the idea of lifting my 100+ pound tire that high in the air...
flat in the bed wont work with my toolbox and it takes up too much cargo space
anyway i decided that i want to mount it like this
i am gonna attach it to the top bar that goes across with hinges and have a latch on the bottom. i will also get a heavy duty gas shock to help lift it and hold it up when its extended. it will flip up like a hatch.
what do you guys think?
i havent seen anything like this yet but if someone has any pics or advice let me know

I wouldn't trust the gas shock to hold it up, help lift it yah but it add a rod like the hood prop. Could make it swing down from the back of the tire and hold it up.

Just a thought but if it was me I'd mount it on a angle attached to the roll bar on a side swing. Sorta mounted like this..

tried it and in theory i like that idea better but the tire is just to big. for it to clear the tailgate in would cover up the lights and stick up pretty far past the roof line
