I did this a long time ago, but see this pop up every now and then.
Back in the single no Kids days, Cargo space was more important than a rear seat.

I bought a junk yard rear cushion, took the trim cover off and installed back in the XJ.
Put foam back on and marked the floor level on the pad.
Cut it off level with the floor and discard top of the foam bun.
I had the old rear back trim cover also, the carpet on the back of that is a perfect match for the floor carpet in your XJ.
I cut the cover up and wrapped the cushion with the carpet.
The base of the cushion is glass reinforced plastic, drilled holes and used christmas trees to attch trim cover.

The pictures show the cushion installed, note flat floor.
The lock mechanism still works, pull the tab and the cushion pivots up normally and the under seat storage is available.

looks good. why not just take the bottom part out and fold the back down? still, looks great, nice job. where do i get a cage like that at?!?!

It is a T&J cage with extra bars and some customization.

The rectangular back folded down, left holes on the sides, the cushion matches the contours of the wheel wells better, I had and extra cushion, not back. And the cushion locks down with the latch.
