Winches for this application are not designed to be used like the op currently mounted his.
Your statement is wrong, or rather incorrect for how winches distribute load.

I second the above post. The winch is designed to be mounted horizontal because it is then applying a shearing force to the bolts. When mounted veritaclly the force is trying to rip those bolts through the mounting plate and out of the housing. The shearing is much stronger and so they are recommended to be mounted as such.
