Dana 30 Sleeve and Truss
I'm getting ready to stuff an e locker and 4.88s and chromolys in a hp 30 to put in my 2000 xj. Thought I better beef the housing. I split 2.5" pipe and welded it back together over the tube. Then I built the truss out of 3/8" flat. I didn't want to weld to the diff housing so I went over the top. Also braced the lower knuckles. I think it's overkill for how I wheel, but I like to do it right the first time! Any suggestions while I'm at it?

If your truss'n your dana 30, you may as well beef up your LCA mounts while your at it. Nice job on that truss by the way

I agree with That Jeep Guy, the LCAs are the weakest thing on the D30. With that truss I would have to say that the sleeve is WAAAAAAAAAAYYYY overkill/adding un-needed weight.

Pretty cool, my first thought was that every farmer I know always overbuilds stuff, and with good reason, but then I thought, "That's a bunch of unicycles man!"
Definitely build some better LCA mounts, preferably up higher. Are you putting the right side upper link back on? Moving your lower mounts will require some rework on the arms, but at this point, why not go 3-link? Leave the pass side upper off, raise up your lowers, new links, new crossmember...
That's where my head is this weekend...

Thanks guys I didn't realize the lca mounts were that much of a weak spot. On my lp 30 I put skids on them, and I'll do the same on this, but now I'll also probably gusset and plate them. I have no desire to overhaul my front suspension....again. Once the axle is back under the xj I'll modify and reattach the pass side Uca mount.
It may be overkill, but I didn't think just sleeving or just the truss would do enough so I did both. I probably didn't add much more than 10 pounds total. I did the holes mostly for looks.
Steering will be my next project. It seems to me the tie rod is the weakest part of the stock setup. The drag link seems pretty stout. Is there a cheap Way to upgrade just the tie rod? I sleeved the stock tie rod on my 90 xj but the tre's look like cheap toothpicks

Haha I just did the same, except I got 2" .250 wall. Slide in inside the tubes and rosette/plugged welded it!
So now theres less room for grit and grim inside the tubes! And its unnoticed on the outside! Works awsome! Also braced the UCA and installed some skids & 1/8" tabs on my LCA mounts, as well as some gussets on outter C's.

I learned that from the junkyard parts thread

and here's an install/comparison thread
