D30 center section alloy??

Does anyone know for SURE what the pumpkin of a XJ D30 is made of? Alloy and process?? (And No,, it is not JUST "Cast Iron")

Thanks,
Slack

It's cast steel.

Why is it necessary to know the exact chemical composition? Curious.

Knowing the alloy (and casting process) will let me hone in on the best way to weld to it. How much and how fast to pre and post heat, etc.

And "Cast Steel" is the one I have not heard yet, I have heard everything but cast steel,,

Use an IR thermometer. Heat the housing to 500*. Weld. Cool down slowly...use a torch to add heat, but add less and less as it cools. Peen the welds on cooldown. The IR thermo is your friend here.

Mig is fine. If using arc, you can use nickel rod, but not totally needed. Mig is your best and easiest bet.

I was going to throw together an oven for pre and post heat.
I have access to some junk (but working electric ovens, I was going to cut some slots on each side so the pumpkin could sit in the oven with the axle tubes sticking out.
