Cowl Intake Build. (Another One Doh!)
 

So after sitting on the idea for a while. I decided to do a little cowl intake build. I have roughly $80 into it. I can do a step by step if it's wanted. I did a little fabrication to this. But I'm sure someone can get by without it. Items needed : 3 feet of 3" Exhaust Tube ($20) Midas 2 3"- 3" Spectre Couplers ($6) Advance Auto 1 3/8" Air Compressor Fitting ($4.98) Lowes 1 pack flexible air duct hose. ($15) Advance Auto 1 K&N RU5111 Filter ($34.99) K&N 6 clamps ($6) Menards I cut the exhaust tubing in 3 sections. 1 foot sections. I ended up flaring the ends to overlap each other. Welded them together. Took the middle one and ended up bending in a "L" shape. 90* turn. I drilled a hole in it to thread the air compressor fitting for the crank case vent hose. Then cut the spectre air duct hose in half. I put one coupler on end nearest throttle body. Clamped that. Then proceeded to clamp the flexible hose on the end. Then to throttle body. I proceeded to the other side. Using a 3" Hole saw. Drilled a hole into my firewall. I pulled the cowl off the jeep. Pull the tab and lift up the wiper arm. Cowl screen comes off with about 6-8 Phillips head screws. I took a grinder and cut a square on the passenger side for my filter to sit. I took the filter, other half of tubing and the coupler and clamped it together. Then stuck the coupler thru the hole I cut in the firewall and clamped it to tubing. I reinstalled everything and so far it's not loud. (My rustys air tube was waaaay louder than this.) for less then $100 I'm excited and feel a little safer when I wheel. Most remove the factory air setup for dual batteries. I however am installing train horns. I can add pics step by step if it's easier for some. Good luck & happy wheeling.

Nice jeep. I have been thinking about a cowl intake and have been concerned about the noise. Make sure you keep the clamps tight on the flex tubes. They can be tricky.

I'm trading the jeep Sunday for a YJ. So it'll sadly Be missed. If you wide open throttle it you hear it sound like its "spooling"

Interested in seeing what it looks like under the cowl if you have that picture.

The more ghetto, but more cheaper approach. Happy so far.

VTJeep - some of those peoples comments are EPIC! I like that they think the air flow is INTO the cowl!

"The intake goes into the firewall? When does it go back to the engine?" - probably messes up his own oil change!

I guess as long as you keep tucked far over on the drivers side you are ok, otherwise the problem with that way is it sucks air where the cowl is open, so as water dumps in on the cowl the suction of air would suck the water.... on the other side it is closed, so that cowl area would need to fill up with water first.

I was amazed at the stupidity of those comments! Truly clueless.. Worse were the people telling me I shoulda used black PVC.. While I'm at it maybe some stickers to add HP too?? Anyways.. As far as taking on water, you'd have to have your whole hood underwater enough to really cover the cowl. At that point your in some pretty deep **** and that's way beyond anything I plan to do with my jeep. Yes, for those who wheel that hard you'd need a roofline snorkel..
