Here is what I went with. The stainless steel fender mount with a 102" stainless steel whip. Very important to run a good quality stiff spring. Especially if you run a whip or a fire stick because it will rip the screws right out of the fender. I’ve been running this setup for about 6ix years other than an occasional tightening of the screws, have had no problems. However, the best location for a ground plane antenna is dead center of the vehicle (for best all around reception).

heres mine, i used the original antenna spot for the radio. the wires were cut and no radio. dont reall listen to it, use my Zune. i dont like mountin it in the back by the lights. afraid to brake it off. but heres my first attempt. original hole. i just used a washer to make it fit.
but i wasnt getten a good enough ground so i decided to make a better mount so i made this. and yes its a horrible weld. be nice i was my first time......
still needs griding and paint. but you get the idea.

i hope you put in some supports and gussets in there. i seen a guy a few years back with a whip antenna in the same place and it twisted and cracked the fender. and he had a semi-cylinder with is stronger then boxed. i hope it works for you. good luck

I plan on doing something similar but placing another stock antenna mount from junkyard on the drivers fender. Also gonna use 4-5' whip with a small spring base. I would definitelly get a spring for that fiberglass stick.

if you look closely at the second picture, it is hanging from the mirror.
Im constantly debating where to put my CB antenna, and I think tucked closer to the body but somewhere its least likely to hit stuff, is barely inside/driver side front bumper..since i have a huge front steel bumper, it'll be grounded. I think my antenna is only a 3 or 4' one like the one in the above pics.
I just cant wait to hook up my nice panasonic CB...got a $175 CB for $60 including the mount and antenna.

haha, like the guy said above. no one is, just haning there. i scare people with it all the time. but yeah im guna put a spring in there. i was cruising in my backyard and went in betweet two trees that are really close together and both leaning pretty hard. my antenna got hung up in one and bent it back pretty far. so i saved it. but today i found lumps and bumps in my fender around the mount. so in guna add some strength and a spring.

i intergrated my mount to my roof rack when i made it. i used a piece of 1/8 wall 1 1/2 box tubing that i cut at a 30 degree angle or so and welded it straight to the rack. i have a 4' firestick on it that i had layin around. i get awesome reception and plenty of power thanks to an 80watt amp. the only down side is goin through the drive-thru i have to swing wide or it will hit the building. once i get some spare cash im buying a whip for it.
