axle truss thickness

Is 10 gauge steel to thin for a truss?

Atmos 07-11-2014 05:44 PM

I'd say yes too thin to make it entirely out of 10 ga. maybe some gussets or little pieces like that could be 10 but for the most part you'll want to be using 3/16 and 1/4" or 3/8" for structured pieces/ link mounts. heck, artec uses 3/8 and 1/4. ruffstuff can't be far off from those thicknesses either

a good answer for these kinds of questions is to google axle trusses and see what all the companies are using. that'll pretty much be your answer.

which axle is the truss for anyway? if you're thinking about trussing a rear axle I say forget it. not worth the hassle or cost. especially on a stock axle

I have a nice slab of ten gauge that's why I asked. But I wanted to truss my 8.8 and 30, I guess I'll go with tubbing. Thanks for the information

you can truss up the 30 if you know what you're doing. for the 8.8, just weld the tubes and call it a day. it's not going anywhere. save yourself the effort

typically I say something is better than nothing. so if you put together a really stout design and tie it into upper link mounts and the coil buckets as best you can, you could probably get away with 10ga. because like you, my frugality would probably outweigh my need for overkill if I had a sheet of 10ga laying around. good luck. post pics of whatever you come up with
