Default Winter tires for light cars

My mom drives about 60 miles to work and back each day. She has a very small and light ford escort, gets 35mpg, I am concerned with her driving it this winter. I drove it a few times last winter and If there was snow on the roads there was no stopping or steering with this car. thank god we had a mild winter. She has put over 30,000 miles on the tires since than and I would really like her to be safe this winter. I was thinking of getting her studded tires for the front because most of the braking power is in the front and it is a FWD. What do you guys think, any recommendations on specific brands, does anyone else have the same problem?

If it was me i would find her a winter beater of a 4x4 blazer or explorer.

Another vehicle is out of the question right now. I did have her drive my jeep a lot last year though. But we get a lot of surprise lake effect snow storms out here.

Sounds like you need Firestone Winterforce tires. They are cheap, studdable, and aggressive winter tires. A car size like that can be bought for under $100 each at Walmart.
My in-laws had a set on their Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2wd. Made a huge difference on a light front wheel drive SUV in the winter up here in NY.

X2 on the winterforces. They're cheap as hell and work great, can't beat em for the money. Anyone who says you need 4wd for snow has never driven on snows.

I have a Escort to with brand new regular tires on it and it is a light weight when it comes to snow. I drive 80 miles a day with steep hills. I ended up getting a beater 4x4 for that cause I don't trust it.
But I've had Bridgestone Blizzaks before. They worked pretty nice on my other car.

NEVER get studded tires on just the drive tires (or just snow tires on just the drive tires)

sure, some people have done it. But if you are going around a slippery corner and the front of the car grips fine and the back of the car doesn't you will spin out of control.

(im sure an escort tire is already skinny) but skinnier tires will find traction in the snow better than a wider tire as well.

I would just get whatever snow tire you can get for a decent price, every one of them will be a lot better than an all season in the slippery stuff.

I've got Kumho road-venture SAT's on my XJ.. Haven't tested them in the white stuff yet, but everything I've heard about them says they are just as good as most studded snow tires, (which are supposedly illegal? Where I live, at least?)

General Articmax, imho better than anything listed here. They're cheap (esp from discount tire), last a long time and excellent on ice. Been very happy with them on my wife's mini...
