Default v8 swapped jeep electrical issues

first off sorry but its a yj i think a friend gave me to work on
i cant make another account and gotta get it fixed up quick
chevy 350 has a hei and a red batt wire on it isnt hooked up! yet it still is starting . i didnt notice if the temp worked but after wiggleing the wires around
the temp guage is going full and the check gauges light is on.
now its going full and zero randomly
it sounds like theres a fuel pump in the rear makes a noisey sound constantly while the key is on wether running or not.
there is a white wire in the engine bay when i give it 12 volt turns the pump on but want hooked up i cant find any other way its getting power
what do ya think strange aint it
i didnt know a carb can be hooked to the fuel pump in a tank?

check out the trans fluid water?

possible temp guage wires

red wire from batt wasnt pluged in was connected to a plug in 3 way like would plug in to a fuse end was hooked up with a wire labeled fuel that goes to a white wire then under toward trans

A carb can work with any fuel pump just needs a fuel pressure reg to bring the psi down.See if you can find a wiring diagram online for the yj to know what those cables go to.

If that is the bottom of the diff then it is a D35. The 8.25 has a flat spot on the bottom of the casting. That probably is a 350. Find the timing mark on the harmonic balancer and mark it with something white. The degree markings are on a piece of sheet metal attached to the timing cover. Have yo looked for the fuel pump yet. The one in the tank has far too much pressure for a carb

Its a chevy small block it can be anything from a 302 to a 350,Look at the balancer can you see it ?The timing pointer can be on either side of the front cover depending year of the engine so look at both.

You got a timing light and know how to set the timing and how to adjust a carb by feel or a vacuum gauge ?

i was able to check timming it was 4 before the indicator ends at 4 degrees also. i changed the valve cover gaskets and it was still leaking oil took it to a shop they said its comeing from the dipstick tube because the rings are bad and it needs to be rebuilt, worn rings causing oil to push out of dip stick, what you think of this? the motor dont smoke the exhaust is rich though the owner was told the motor has 22000 miles the body only has 89k
