Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter
Stay away from the V10, crappy gas mileage and low on power. A Super Duty with the 7.3 diesel is the way to go. The 6.0 is one huge POS diesel with nothing but problems. An F150 with a 5.4 gas engine is ok, but they seem to lack the power that Chevy and Dodge have. my dad had a 99 F250 with the 7.3, it ran very well and had plenty of power. He has a 08 with the 6.4 (Ithink), it's rated higher than the 7.3, buy it does not feel like it.
The Ford modular engines have problems with blowing the spark plugs out of the head, there are kits out there to fix the buggered hole without replacing or pulling the head. In my opinion, the Ford trucks are a huge pain to work under the hood on. The dealer will pull the cab off just to replace a cylinder head on the right bank of the engine. I'm not a Chevy guy, but Chevy would be my pick out of the big three. Dodge trucks have transmission issues and the check engine light always seem to come on. Fords are low on power and the base model bench will ruin your back. Ford did make an F250 lighter duty that looked like an F150, but it had 7 lug wheels. They were mostly available for fleet use.

thanks bustedback! I know we use the 6.8 in our brush fire trucks and seem kinda weak. a 7.3 was my next option... Did he have any upgrades or just a stock truck?

The 2011 ones are all brand new engines with the exception of the 5L so there isn't much info on them.
I know my dads with the 6.2L is rated for 11300 lbs, its not TOO bad on gas and it feels like if i wrapped a chain around a house it would tear it down in one shot so thats nice... lol
As for the superdutys, my friend has one and after he drove my dads he wished he went with the F150 because he DDs his F250 and just tows the Jeep. The F150 has more than enough power and control over a trailer with an XJ on it.

7.3L is the engine to have. The 6.0L & 6.4L are damn good engines but you need to follow the maintenance schedules real close to prevent problems because they are very sensitive to contaminated fluids.

the v10 has as much power a lil less but as much as the 7.3 but not as much torque plus it eats gas. the 2000 plus 7.3 has a glow plug relay that needs to be replaced every 2 years its maintence on it otherwise some of them wont start plus they have whats called a huei injection system (hydraulic electric unit injector) which uses the motor oil to fire the injector so if your low on oil or pressure the dont run worth a crap and also the injectors on the 98 to but 00 are garbage. the 6.0 has its set of problems mainly because they put a bunch of sensors on for emissions and stock is the only way to keep the problems away they will still happen being the first of the model engine the 6.4 horrible on mileage and they put a variable geometry turbo that means the turbo veins can change pitch depending on load of the engine and the reason those go bad is because they absolutly hate idling the 6.7 i hear is an incredible engine being new i dont know alot about it yet other than the turbo is in the valley shorter tubes faster spool and the urethra will go 30000 miles before fill up on a stock truck

i own a 2004 6.0 and love it they are good motors you just need to take care of them they have alot more power than the 7.3, i also owned a 2004 f150 4.6 and really liked it. they out pull the chevy and dodge half tons although chevy rides smoother. also owned a dodge 1500 and it had no power at all. for a dodge or chevy i would go with the cummins or duramax. but personally for cheaper to drive i would go with the f150 and for power i would go with a f350 6.0

im a dodge fan so i would have to say 6 in a row if you wanna tow but i also like the ford diesel if you treat them right and have a warrenty dodge has plenty of power there rated close to the same the only reason chevy rides better is its the only truck with independent which is not good for towing and not good for hard abuse.

7.3 is a damn tuff motor. V10 has power but sucks gas like a drunk with free drinks. I ran a 5.4 no mods and could spin 41's but it sucked on gas and I never pulled anything with it. I had 2 Dogdes. 318 ran like a bat out hell my '99 with the 360 was the biggest POS on earth. I had all kinds of problems with the motor and tranny to the point I will never buy a Dog again. Here's my 5.4 I sold just two weeks ago.

end of the day, you have a 100 000 mile warranty for a reason. Use it if it breaks down, if you keep your truck longer than that, do the work yourself and improve it.

I have driven more dodge trucks with messed up transmissions and gearing than you would ever believe
