Default Subaru Forester brake issue

My buddies 2008 forester, doing the drum brakes, the self adjusting fork seems to have excessive play. What's the issue here? In the pic I pulled the fork to fill the gap and it's about 1/2".

Well, no, it's not all screwed up. That's how they are supposed to be installed. Google searching "2008 Subaru Forester drum brake assembly" shows exactly this.. Figured out the issue anyhow- brake pads were just not seated fully/properly..
