Possible off topic question
Hello, I'm trying to get my DR field and brush mower running. The gas tank developed a leak. I was not able to repair it using the long curing JB weld with copper surrounds to keep the JB where I wanted it. Cleaned and roughed up every thing w/my trusty Fordom Tool.
I took an old fuel tank of similar shape off an old motor that had been setting for years. There is rust and sludge inside the old tank. I have a sediment bowl on the tank out put and an inline fuel filter before the carb. Seems like I shold be able to watch the bowl and filter and be able to use the mower again. They always want an outrageous price for gas tanks. Way over a C note IIRC. If anyone knows of a cheaper solution I'd love to hear about it. If I knew more chemistry I probably could have repaired the original tank. Don't know where I went wrong. Tankless in N.M. Ron Ron |
A friend of mine yrs back (mid 80's) had a Honda 4 wheeler that developed a leaks in the gas tank. He used some kind of sealer that lined the complete inside of the tank. I have no idea what he used. He died a few yrs ago. I know he was big into boats so maybe what he used dealt with them.

http://www.eastwood.com/ew-gas-tank-...-for-cars.html or they make a stuff like jb weld that is rated for fuel use that can seal up pin holes.

show a pix. maybe you can sub in something new, heavy plastic gas can? something from a junk mower from the mower fixit guy.
gotta be something. |
Yeah, I wonder if you could rig up a "universal" style tank (coolant overflow, oil, etc)

Thanks it may have been something like I ordered for a different project. Flex Seal Liquid. Supposed to dry like rubber. But it may be easier to find another used tank. Gonna do a search.... many thanks to you guys for the good suggestions.

Good luck to ya. Let us know how you do.

Thanks everyone, I have a product ordered called Flex Seal Liquid that might let me use the old tank. I figured a way to coat each of the six surfaces one at a time with this stuff and if it works like they claim I should be good to go. There are a sediment bowl and fuel filter in that order between tank and carb. That will let me know if things went well with the sealing process.

Please do not use Flex seal liquid on your gas tank, even the manufacturer doesn't recommend it. The gas will dissolve it.
Por 15 makes a gas tank sealant for $18 per half pint. There are many other proper products, just search "gas tank sealant". Would hate to have your leak open back up on a hot engine and cause a fire. |
Hey, JS,sure glad you stopped by. I'll take a look @ Por15 and the other options.

POR15, Eastwood sell gas tank sealer. Along with a multitude of others. Also loctite and JB both sell tank repair stuff. X2, do not put flex seal in it.

Thank you waynerd, I appreciate your help and everyone else's.
