So the old lady has a 97 mercury mountaineer, shes getting tired of it and wants me to jazz it up. Problem is it has some awd system im not that sure about. Ive straight axled an exploder before, but it had a selectable t case. This has no shifter, full 4x4 all the time. But this thing is an animal as far as power goes. Not sure how but it has the same v8 that my mustang cobra had. So it will be fun lifted and at the ohv park. So does anyone have experience lifting an awd muoantaineer? All I can find is explorer info. Can I do a SAS with the awd t case? I have a d44 I could use if you can SAS it. If not im assuming just crank the torsion bars? Ugh, why wont she just be easy and let me buy her an XJ!

I know nothing about Mountaineers but I can't think of any reasons you can't do a SAS with an AWD T case. That being said I saw a HUGE lifted Mountaineer at my college once. It was lifted probably 10+inches and had 38"s on it. SAS of course. Funny thing is a really hot little blonde was driving it.

Those t-cases are not strong, BTW they are a viscous coupling type setup. If you were going through the trouble of doing all that work, it should not be much of a problem to swap it out with a selectable case like out of another exploder or ranger. The Explorer actually had better 5.0 parts than the mustang GT did. The heads and intake are not great parts but the best pieces mass produced from Ford. Some of the mustang guys actually look for these engines to get the GT40 heads and intake. I think ford hopped the engine up a little bit just so it didn't feel as turdy as the 4.0 SOHC.

So if I go through with it I think im.gonna swap in the explorer case and use the short arm stuff from my old lift on my MJ. Will taking out that stock case make the computer go nuts?

Search s.a.s. 98 explorer on this thread. I did a 98 explorere v8 awd. Swapped in a narrowed d44, f150 tcase, waggy ft leafs, crossover steering, full spool front, detroit rear, 5.13 gears, toyota steering box to get rid of the rack steering and a lot more. Lots of work and I mean a lot of work...it works awsome though.

just an fyi on that motor. i actually have like 3 upr/lwr intakes from the mounty and exploder. i decast them, polish them and gasket match if so oredered. i pride myself of my knowledge of fox body to sn97. Also i had a mounty too. great power. rode like ****.lol
the only difference between that intake and the cobra and the real gt-40 intakes was like 10cfm.thats nothing. but if you were to throw the cam into ur wifes mounty from a fox cobra or early sn95 cobra then u would have the same power. as i recall even the heads were the same volume intake and cc. you proly know that. sorry. here is some pics of what my b-inlaw and i did.
1st pic...rite out of the j-yard. 2nd pic isjust about half way through. dont mean to jack ur thread bro..im a pic *****.lol

Hey man I used to have a Mercury. Great suv but I had the same problem with it being an AWD and wanting to lift it. The torsion twist and shackles were the best bet with some bigger tires. But I have the 153 Warrior Shackles that I never even got to use cause I totalled the thing...now I have Jeep! But anyways they add about 1.5"-2 in the rear so if you want I could sell them to ya.
