Jepp Willy's
 

My buddy has a 1944 jeep Willy's from WWII. It's stamped with ford on the glove box on the original specs/dimensions plate. I was just wondering if ya'll could explain to me a couple of things:
1-Was jeep made by ford in this time?
2-If so when did it change over to AMC then eventually to Chysler?

Ford and Willys build "jeeps" during WWII.
The Ford is called the GPW... while the Willys is the MB.

Yes... Ford built the Willys designed Jeep during WWII. When Ford lost the competition to build the Jeep to Willys, (even though Bantam's design was technically the winner). Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone complained to the War Department and Congress. Suddenly, the War Department decided that Willys could not produce Jeeps quickly enough and Ford was awarded a contract to produce them.

After the end of the war, Willys received control of their patents and continued to produce Jeep vehicles. Ford sued Willys and US government several times over these patents. Eventually leading to the creation of the Bronco to compete with the CJ.

AMC came into the picture in 1970, when AMC purchased Kaiser Jeep.

In August of 1987, Chrysler bought the Jeep Eagle division of AMC for all intensive purposes ending AMC's existence.
