Jeep Wrangler Issues, acceleration, muffler

Let me start this post off by saying, I'm completely new to cars. I've fixed a few issues on my Ford Escape, but I don't have the experience with repair as some may have so take it easy on me.

1994 Jeep Wrangler

It's my roommates. I took it for a spin today to see what was wrong and how I could help before she takes it to a mechanic. She doesn't seem to care much about the car, but I really want to fix it because it's just something that I feel would be valuable experience.

First thing I noticed is that it seems like something is wrong with the muffler. It's loud as hell and emits a really terrible gasoline like odor. It also doesn't seem to want to accelerate and when I do, the sound is even worse.

Where should I start? Can I give you guys any more specifics that would help?

Thank you so much in advance

First thing this is Cherokeeforum.com,
Not wranglerforum.com

Second this is oem cherokee tech.

Third there is an "other vehicles" section...... this belongs there, so I'm moving it there.

I'd let her pay a for a mechanic unless your trying to get laid or something.
