Hi, its been a very long time since I've made a thread on the forums! Anyways I ended up purchasing an old rare Jeep J-4000 series pickup truck and not too much serious work needs done to it.
Its able to start and run just needs a new carburetor - But there is a problem...
While I was snooping around the truck I found an "Emission Control tag" on the front arch of the wheel well in the engine bay. With the information stating its meant for 232-258 Manual Trans.
I'm not an expert on this stuff in any way shape or form, I just want to know what this means and if its just a sticker they put with all those models, not for a particular motor.
Oh that's bad. Very, very bad. You should sell that to me immediately !!! I'll take care of that problem for you... Let's see, western Ohio, 400 miles divided by 70 mph equals 4 point, uh... I'll be there in an hour, don't let anyone else buy it first. Too dangerous !!!
All vehicles are required, for the most part at least, to have two stickers/placards on them. One for the engine and the other for the chassis, located on the driver's side door or door jam. As you see, the engine one under the hood states the model year of the engine and anything related to maintaining emissions compliance. Compare the number of settings listed on that sticker to one for a 4.0; got to love EFI... I know that for the one on the door, if you change the axle rating, add a lift axle, etc and want to tag the vehicle at the new configuration, the installer must install a sticker/placard over the existing one. I'm almost certain you're supposed to do the same for the emissions one under the hood if you change motors.
The 3rd picture is just for the ignition coil stating that the aftermarket MSD part meets CARB (California) requirements, which is pretty much irrelevant on a 1973 vehicle.
Engine: 4.3L with headers and full 3" exhaust system
Yes, I need that pickup too
Seriously though, CA started smog requirements in 1968 with the PCV valve requirement. It got worse from thee though. But in CA, the toughest smog state, you are not required to smog it if it was manufactured before 1974. So you just made it. . As stated the MSD sticker is for an aftermarket part that just happens to be CARB compliant. Just get it running and enjoy it. So it is a 4000. Does it have the Dana 60 rear with the semi float axle? A rare bird if it does
So a 1973 J4000 would be the AMC 360 engine, and not the 6 cyl.
Kinda hard to see just what is under the hood?
The carburator in the picture is an Autolite/Motorcraft 2brl.
I have one here that needs to be rebuilt if you want it?
Just pay shipping is all.
EDIT: Oh BTW!
NICE TRUCK!!!!
