If you WEREN'T going to buy an XJ, what would you?

First, I'd look for a YJ, next I'd look for a '90-ish Trooper. My father in law had one, & pulled up small trees with it. I hauled 20 something 4x8 sheets of plywood in it. It had factory 4.88 gears with 235's & it was a beast when off road.
It had the 2.8 crap-tastic motor but it was a reliable vehicle.

I'm shopping for another XJ-sized SUV. My daily driver has been down since November (just moving slow on fixing it, it's not unreliable), and i've realized that when it's back up and running, a 400whp+ 25 year old FWD econobox, even if reliable, isn't really the greatest thing to daily drive 365 days a year in all weather.
I haul motors, parts, do junkyard runs, etc etc etc.
I'm 100% open to the idea of another XJ, but in the interest of mental masturbation and keeping things interesting (Afraid i'd get bored with two of them), what else did/would you guys consider if you weren't going to get an XJ?
So far, i have the following:
1) 1st gen Pathfinder. Seems that besides rust, these things are absolute cockroaches, and i like the way they look. Buddy had one in high school with the 5spd and i remember it being pretty fun.
2) 1st/2nd gen 4Runner. If i can find one that isn't rusty as hell. (I'm a toyota fanboi at heart)
3) J60/J80 Land Cruiser. See above.
4) Isuzu Trooper or Rodeo? Don't know much about these, but i know the early Troopers are supposedly indestructible.
I don't want a Grand Cherokee. I don't want an Explorer, Durango, or Blazer.
I DO want to spend in the $3k range, and i'm not concerned about having something that's refined or super comfortable (I have a high tolerance and i feel like our lifted Cherokee feels like a Cadillac). I'd prefer to have simple, reliable, cheap, and funky is cool. (Why i really like the 1st gen Pathfinders.)
This vehicle would have less than 10k miles put on it a year, probably more like 5k, as i will still be driving the uncontrollable FWD econobox 90% of the time during 3 seasons, and probably 50% of the time in the 4th season.
So.. what would YOU look at, considering the XJ as a benchmark?

You should look at 1st or 2nd gen Xterras, you can find some with low miles for cheap, and in a lot of ways they are like a modern XJ.

Not really interested in a pickup truck. No great reason, just not.
Here's some of the current front-runners:
J80 Land Cruiser: http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/4278101187.html
Another J80 Land Cruiser: http://desmoines.craigslist.org/cto/4306010590.html
R50 Pathfinder 4x4 5spd: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/4326868948.html
1st gen Pathfinder 4x4 5spd V6: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/4329738779.html
1st gen Pathfinder 4x4 5spd V6: http://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/4278337021.html
98 4Runner SR5: http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/4328931889.html
97 4runner SR5 lifted: http://dayton.craigslist.org/cto/4327094047.html
01 QX4 with timing tensioner noise (Wife would take this one over, i'd drive the XJ): http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/4330847877.html
99 Trooper 4x4 5spd: http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/ctd/4291768154.html
Rad as **** 2002 S/C XTerra: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/4292748619.html
83 Tercel 4x4 w/ motor swap: http://lincoln.craigslist.org/cto/4312228190.html
And obviously there's a ton of Jeeps out there. I don't think i'm going to bother with the QX4. From what i'm reading, the luxury crap they added on the 2nd gen Pathfinder to make it doesn't seem to hold up well, and it doesn't have true 4wd. Just a funky AWD setup.
Any standouts or "RUN AWAYS!!!!!!" in that list?
Or is nobody going to view this now, because it's not in the XJ section? Apologies for putting it there in the first place, but this is a thread about using the XJ as a benchmark.

4 runner would be my choice, LC if you need the extra room. The 4 runners are real nice, and generally very reliable. IFS up front will ride way better than the XJ but will hurt you some when wheeling. Try and find one with the rear e locker if possible.
