Default I want a Diesel Truck

So my 96 XJ is my daily driver, but I want to eventually off road with it, so I wanted a different daily driver, and something that could tow around my jeep. I also want more fuel options, so I decided to look into a diesel truck.

Someone recommended a 1987 K30 with a 6.2 GMC Liter engine, but their horsepower and towing isn't very impressive.

Then there are the Ford 7.3 Liter from 1999 to 2003, but those are rare to find, expensive, or high mileage.

Then of course there are the 2004-2007 5.9 liter Cummins dodge rams that are good on horsepower but are still "new" so the price is a issue.

There are also ideas to throw a 5.9 into a 1987 K30, and get the benefits of the newer engine with the older frame and good axle combo.

Also there are the new trucks, the 2011 models, and basically a massive down payment will have to be placed, because a monthly payment above $400 will prevent me from doing anything to my jeep.

I don't mind kit bashing engines and frames together to get a impressive towing hauling truck that I don't have to make monthly payments on, and older body styles don't bother me.

just buy a first gen dodge. 91-94 will be intercooled. the prices are very fair. has a ve pump which can be tweaked and also upgraded to a P7100 pump if you ever want to get serious.
also the prices of 94-98 trucks are pretty reasonable. mechanical reliability, all the aftermarket support you could want etc.
The ford 7.3's are good engines, but they get expensive o fix and have some oil leak issues.

Only way to go is a 5.9 cummins backed by a 5 speed...do not get a chevy 6.2 diesel, i had one in the past and they have NO power and are gutless as ever...7.3 powerstrokes aren't bad, but the 5.9 cummins diesel in my book are the best!

I picked up a 3rd gen cummins to DD and haul my junk to and from the trails. Right now its cheaper to drive. Better fuel mileage than my jeep and diesel is cheaper than gas. Win/win. I went with a 3rd gen appose to a 2nd gen cause of the looks(inside and out) Just a better looking rig over all IMO

if ya can, I say go 3rd gen cummins. But thats just me. Find a good deal on one. They can be had for 12-15 grand depending on mileage and options.

I'd take that Big Block Power Wagon any day... then again.. taking a nice old school Power Wagon, and installing a 12valve CTD would be sweet to own too!!

Do NOT even think about the Ford 6.0 and 6.4 diesels! 97-2003 Ford 7.3 diesels are pretty good, 91 and up Dodge trucks are a good choice, and the 2003 and up Duramax or good. The early Duramax had injector issues and were very expensive to repair. 6.2 and 6.5 GM diesel trucks should be avoided.
