Differential wear?

Differential wear?
My wife's 03 Explorer with 110k.
Here is what is in the front diff. Those are wear marks on the ring gear & pinion, the light reflects the wear pretty good.
The gear oil seemed to stink more than usual, but no evidence of moisture.
Does this look normal? Focusing on the diff now since I got gear oil shot from the vent tube. Why would it do that?
I makes it's worst noise on decelleration. Seems mostly quiet cruising down the Xway. Is all of this fall in line with what the pics show? The buttons on the dash are AUTO 4x4, HIGH 4x4 & LO 4x4. Is that AWD? I hate not having the 2wd option.
