Cj2a Iron Duke build help?

I realize that this isn't the site for info on Pontiac Iron Dukes but I have a nearly complete cj2a that I stumbled across trading labor for people's "garbage." I have no motor, trans, t case, axles. I want a TBI Duke in it. Mainly because it's still somewhat light, I know there crazy tough, it has plenty of power for a cj2a. And I like TBI alot.

1)Does anyone know what I should pull the motor out of?
2)Manual trans only options? (I hate autos & I won't put an auto in a cj2a)
3)T-case options?

I can plot out axles and all else somewhat successfully on my own but I know very little about dukes and there options.

I also realize that parting it out is probably my best bet but I don't want to I've always wanted a cj2a and I'm not giving up on it.

I am looking at an XJ that has an iron duke in it. In pieces. I just did a few searches. I found that some of the postal vans had it. Its in a lot of cars. You have to ensure that manual or auto is correct for ease of install. I will follow this thread to keep updated and learn from you. Share all you can!

I have had Flat Fenders, CJs etc. I guess that makes me an old fart. There are two engines that do very well. The Buick V6 or Chevy 283 V8 if you want the extra horses. The straight 6 is really just too long for a 2A that was sized for a 4 cyl. The V6 is perfect and allows you to adapt power steering with brackets off any Buick V8 of that era. There is something you should know about the 225 and 231 V6. The 225 was made on the cheap. Good motor, but has an odd fire sequence because it was a cut down V8 and they didn't change the journals on the crank. It has a very heavy flywheel to keep it from running rough. Not a bad thing, gives it a ton of torque but can break weak trannys. The 231 has a redesigned crank to eliminate that. The other thing is that if you use the running gear out of an XK it is just too long for a 2A. If it was me, I would use the T890 four speed mated to a T18 transfer case (you have an off set rear end) and then if you want some highway speed use a Warn/Saturn overdrive. You will need an aftermarket aluminum radiator, but those are easy to get from Summit Racing. When Jeep went to the straight 6 in the CJs, they had to add an extra 4" to the engine bay that you don't have. The above combo will give you everything, good crawl gears and highway speed that should get you about 18 mpg highway
