busted leaf- safe?
wondering if i could get some quick input for my coworker. on his gmc, the rear pass. side leaf pack has a busted bottom leaf. it snapped right in the middle, like under the mount plate. the drivers side bottom leaf is off centered a little, too, the bottom leaf has shifted clockwise a couple degrees.
as for the leafs shifting and "fanning" like they are seems like nuts on u bolts might not be tightened to spec? but wtf is with the busted leaf. he doesnt wheel it, it is totally stock except for some engine mods, so no lift blocks, or funky **** like that...
IS IT OK TO DRIVE?? i figured yes. i grabbed onto the busted leaf and it only bounces up and down, no side to side. btu now that the leaf is broke and basically not seated with the rest of the pack, so is the potential for disaster? i have my ipod so i can take pics, but no friggen way to post em as the library has no wifi... help is really appreciated! thanks

Pics would be great to help you but in all honesty he is gonna wanna get that fixed as soon as he can. He might be fine to drive it until he can get the parts but I would get it fixed asap. We broke the leafs in our f250 and drove it the 50 or so miles home but that was about it.

My buddy had that happen to his ranger, and drove it for a month, but only because he was broke. I would fix it as soon as possible though.

I had the same thing happen on my jeep . . the bottom leaf broke into 2 pieces, i drove around for a while with just half of the leaf weged in the bottom but eventualy i just took out the pieces and tightened the centering pin so that the pack was together and then torqued the ubolts nice and tight

I drove one for a year with a busted leaf. My truck had the leaf clamps on the spring so it couldnt even move out of place. I would say as long as it wasn't the main leaf ( the one that wraps around the bushings) it might be ok to drive for awhile, also he might not want to stress it more by hauling load or towing. Might make sure the pieces are not going to fly off and cause road debris, and he might check the spring mounts at the axle are tight too.
