Default Anyone know anything about a cummins?

Alright. So im pretty savvy with most vehicles, but know nothing of the common problems a diesel has. So heres the dilemma. My brother once had a 24 valve cummins, which had a few issues.

Long story short, he traded this:

For this:

Specs: 1996 CAMARO Z28,6SPEED,LT1 383 STROKER(EAGLE),BIG CAM, HEADMAN CERAMIC COATED LONG TUBE HEADERS,K&N COLD AIR INTAKE,MSD WIRES AND BOX W/REV CONTROL,LAUNCHBARS,SUBFRAME CONNECTORS,AIR BAGS,LOWERING SPRINGS,Z06 VETTE WHEELS AND M/T ET SLICKS GOES TOO,CUTOUTS,SLP EXAUST,HURST SHORT THROW SHIFTER ECT...ECT...

(he typed it on his for sale ad, so dont blame me for the caps)

Now its been about 6 months or so.. and the guy wants his car back. My brother has been wanting to sell the car for about a month or so now, just too inconvenient to drive as a DD.. He says he actually wouldnt mind having his truck back.

And this is where the actual question begins. The truck has had a brand new turbo, fuel pump, and some other things done.. However the truck has no power at all. Put a trailer behind it and the thing will barely pull it and itself up a hill. What could this be? Truck also goes in and out of gear from time to time.. Idles great, no white or black.
Any help would be appreciated.

Check all of the intake plumbing, you could be losing boost pressure from a leaky coupler between the turbo and intercooler.

Need to know a little more about the power thing, does it smoke (black) when it has a power loss or make any funny noises? Boost leaks can be common and leaks big enough to provide significant power loss usually results in a lot of black smoke. The trans shift thing going in/out, what gear does it do that in? If you put it in gear and mash the accel down, what RPM does the torque convertor stall at? Is it taking off in 1st gear, and does it have all foward gears? (O/D on it should have 1,2,3,4 & 4th lock up, O/D off it should have 1,2,3 & 3rd lock up)

I guess the truck doesnt have guages, no lift pump pressure or boost guage?

he should be thankful to get his truck back!

All issues listed could be probable...definitely need more info on exactly what it's doing. Get a good set of gauges, it will tell you a lot. There's also another CFforum out there...has a little more to do with the Cummins in particular

Truck has no gauges of the sort besides the normal gauges.. No black or white smoke, and it goes in and out of overdrive every now and again. Truck also acts like it doesnt want to shift (at least for a diesel) like its low on tranny fluid, yet it never is.

Although I don't know you exact issue I will tell you he needS a fuel psi gauge. The injection pump vp44 does not like low fuel psi under 10 but 15 is optimal. I almost am sure the factory lift puma isn't pushing the much and would replace it with a aftermarket unit.

Start with changing the fuel filter. They will act fine one day and the next they will have no power and backfire and carry on... you can get a fuel filter for $30. Just be sure to be careful with the o-rings and lube them up good with some clean diesel before you put the new filter in.
