Default Any Diesel techs out there? Perhaps Knoxville Tn?

I have an 06 Duramax LLY that is throwing engine code P003A. I looked it up and it says "vane position not learned."

Saturday I was pulling away from a red light and all of the sudden I lost boost and the truck fell flat. CEL came on and when i scanned it the code was something along the lines of "vane position failure." I made it to the store and it was idling fine so i cleared all the codes and went inside. Came back out started the truck no CEL and everything was fine...drove fine.

Sunday I was on my way home from Virginia pulling a 24ft enclosed trailer and again the CEL light came on. I scan it and it comes up with P003A. Truck feels like i'm driving with my foot on the brake. What i don't understand is, i can clear the code and sometimes it stays off for a while and the truck drives great. Then it comes back and it drives crappy again. I looked up the symptoms of a vane position sensor failure and people note that the exhaust note changes from a blub blub blub to a hiss. Mine doesn't do that. Truck idles fine regardless. New vane position sensor is $700 so before i go throwing parts at it I would like to get some input.

I went to the dealer and of course they said, "you have to drop it off and pick it up later....Tech look at it...scan it....$$$$$.......$$$$....."

You ever get this resolved? End of next week I'll probably own an LLY too.

So far I've learned that these things have PCV/CCV and an EGR just like my damn GOlf TDI... so any thing like that I'd immediately want to clean the sensor first, and check wiring of course.

I did. It was the turbo vane position sensor. Expensive little SOB. I got lucky and found one on Ebay for $225. Even though it was throwing the vane position sensor code it could have been the turbo. That is what the dealer was trying to sell me, hence why i don't trust dealers.

Truck is still completely stock and about to turn 100k. It runs great and even with the bad position sensor it still got me home from Virginia (6hr drive) pulling a 24ft trailer.

Haha nice. Too bad about that sensor though.
