55 CJ-5 Help needed

1 Attachment(s)
Hey all,
I just got my hands on a rebuild worthy but involved 55 CJ-5 project and I'm a bit out of my element right now. By the time I got it, there have been so many shoddy attempts to revive it that the old F-134 Hurricane needs wiring help. Preliminary research makes me believe that it is a 6-Volt system, am I right? If so, should I convert to 12 and how would I do that?

If any of you know of good resource websites for this project or are done similar in the past, I'd greatly appreciate it. I don't want to lose momentum on this revival.

swap it to a 12v system if it is 6v... its easier to work with... if the wiring is all shot out take a look at painless wiring... they should have something that will fit what you need perfect and everything marked and nice and neat man... there should be much to this either... theres a CJ5 down the street for sale.. $5k and its got 18k original miles... runs and drives and no rust... still has the original tires!!! i want it so bad... lol...

I've been on painless wiring before and like their generic harnesses as they are cheap and would definitely work. The main problem with this 55 is that I'm not sure it will be that simple. I need to look over wiring diagrams and maybe even make up my own for the CJ in my yard. It WAS converted to a 12 v system now that I have looked at it, but the wiring looks so cobbled together that I'm not sure it wouldn't start on fire driving down the road. That means my wiring is unique I suppose.

At this point, I will be tossing the Jeep together quickly to get it road worthy and will build it up next summer. The weather will be turning pretty soon here and we're building a buddy's 76 CJ7 right now. I'd show pics but it is in pieces...literally.

I'll definitely be seeking help here for more advice. Right now I'm working on the wiring and it is over my head in the shape it is in.

just cut the wiring man... i promise itll be a better deal... im gutting my wiring in the XJ and running a painless for this 6.2 diesel swap... all the stock XJ wiring is crap anyways plus itll just be easier with only needing the basics...

right. so I buy the 12 volt ready stuff but with mine converted it will have to be tweaked with to work right?

There is only a few ways to do it right and have it work right... Rip it all out... install a new harness 400bucks.. or a good used on if you lucky to find... get a cheap wiring harness like for vw dune buggys... 75- 100 bucks... Or if your harness is not cut up to bad.... then you can gently unhook it lay it out ... get new wire and ends and build your own...for 100 bucks...

you would have to figure out what runs off 6v if it was in the first place... for me... alot of the 6.2's were 24V... i plan to run 12V... which means a different starter... one alternator instead of two... and thats its... well im told thats it but ebay sells 24v glow plugs so i dunno about that one yet... but you would have to figure out the same...

cj's really didn't change much over the years. Get one for parts and have at it / harness's and locations are all at hand, even a few mounting tabs and the like
