2005 Jeep Liberty
I'm having a problem with my 4x4,I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty..A year ago I had a transmission put into my jeep, every since this has happened each time I tried to use my 4x4 it makes a loud bad clicking sound! My son thought it was a CV axel and replaced the passenger side and it still makes that sound but only in 4x4.Can please someone help me figure it what it could possibly be?!?

Is the sound made as it goes into four wheel drive, or once it has engaged?

It doesn't make a sound putting it in 4x4 only when it's in 4x4.
|
All the time or only while turning, under acceleration, or some other specific condition?

Jeep
It is all the time when it is in 4x4.doesnt matter if I turn or go straight.right when I put it in 4x4 the sound doesn't go away

Then I wouldn't have expected a new CV shaft to do anything for it - they spin all the time, whether 4WD is engaged or not. What you're describing sounds like a problem in the front differential or transfer case - seems like too much of a coincidence that it started right after the trans. was replaced not to be somehow related. After a year of living with the problem you're probably stuck with it, but it should've gone back to the shop that did the transmission ASAP after you encountered the problem. Has the T-case fluid been checked?

It did go back to the shop and they said there wasn't anything wrong with it.But I took it back because my jeep has never had a leak until I took it there. My son also said it's something with the transfer case.Im not too sure about the fluid, I'll have to have someone check.

I see. I'm really hesitant to say - I'm not intimately familiar with that specific 4WD system, and any guesses I could make would be caused by wear, when it seems there's at least as good chance it's bad workmanship which can be a whole other can of worms.
Is it possible to get a video of the sound? |
Sorry I'll see if I can make a video of the sound that it makes today.

They have to have a front drive shaft right? or no? If they do that would be my guess
Edit: Seems like they do and it is a simliar set up to my dads 2000 grand cherokee. I would inspect it... expecially that type of system with the ball bearing type deal. I would suspect it was maybe disconnected when the tranny was pulled. Possible it was on its way out. Also if libertys do not turn the front driveshaft while in 2wd then i would def start there... |
