1996 Honda Civic
 

My son owns a 1996 Honda Civic SOHC D16Y8 5 speed standard shift. He spun a bearing last Sunday requiring a used or remanufactured engine. Since I don't know anything about Hondas I thought perhaps someone here could offer an opinion about how to go about getting it replaced.

I've checked out the reman companies that have websites. The vast majority seem to have multiple failures and unsatisfied customers, to the point of being rejected by the BBB.

The dealership doesn't seem to offer new engines of this year so I'd have to buy the engine in pieces and assemble it myself at a substantial cost.

Any ideas or advice is appreciated.

Find a jdm importer, low mile engines for a decent price.

X2... they definitely have the best engines for the money. the only problem is that most jdm importers do not carry too many honda D blocks. apparently people like using more B and (recently) K blocks for civics. i had the same problem about 6 years ago. i located a D16 in NJ for $700 with 65k miles, compete harness, ECU and transmission. i actually managed to sell the ecu, harness and the tranny and ended up spending only $200 for the engine.

there is a place in portland here who sells jdm engines called auto adventure there website is partsadventure.com they are honda and acura specialists. if you call em they can either ship you a motor or point you in the corect direction. there good people. plus honda engines are the easiest to swap my record is an hour and fourteen min lol

Hmotorsonline.com My buddy went there and was very satisfied. The y8 is a very hard to find motor if you dont know the places to look. I dont think Hmotorsonline has a y8 they have the earlier v-tec motor the d16z6 which is a direct swap besides the ecu. Other than that go to a junkyard and try to find a low mileage one that is in a car that does not look molested by a young kid.

As my first post, I am going to help you out seeing that Im new to Jeeps and have always had Hondas. Google d16y7/y8 mini me swap. This consists of a non-vtec bottom end (y7) and utilizes your y8 head off of your current motor. If you buy a replacement y8 it will only spin another bearing. THEY ALL DO! I am speaking from experience not out of my ***. Also, you dont want to go with a d16z* motor as they are not OBD2a like you need. PM me for further help. :beer:

I've been on all the forums, seen the swaps. This is the first I've heard about all the Y8's spinning bearings.

That is a major bummer as I ordered a brand new short block from the Honda dealer. It's in town and will be delivered on Monday.

these guys build the best, the reason they go bad is because the kiddies beat the crap out of them! otherwise find the lowest mileage local salvage motor you can, all this swap crap is just blowing money, most of the good JDMs are long gone, good luck (ive been a honda tech for 25 yrs).
