First thing is to ensure you have the proper tools for the job.

Deep 14mm
14mm combo wrench
16mm combo wrench
Deep 13mm
Deep 11mm
Deep 21mm

Torque wrench.

Small punch about 1/4" diameter
Needle nose pliers
Small hammer
Soft blow hammer

Lift or Jack and Jack stands

First steps are to drain the oil from the pan using your 16mm and drop the exhaust from the manifold. Using your 14mm tools.

Once you have the pan removed. You will find the rib along the main caps. You will remove this using your 14mm tools.

Now you will remove your rear most main cap using your deep 21mm being careful that you don't drop the main cap! Or bearing!

Set the bearing aside so you don't damage it.

Now you've removed the rear main seal.

Make sure you clean every thing as good as you possibly can. And dip the new seal in some fresh oil before installing.

install the new seal half into the block with the lip toward the front of the jeep, sliding it around the crank as far as you can by hand, then very carefully use your punch to get the seal around the crank until it is even on both sides.

Now install the seal into the main cap.

Now dab a bit of sealant on the ends of the main seal. Like so.

Attachment 277256

Clean and install your main bearing. I always put a generous amount of Molly assembly lube on the bearing and seal.

Attachment 277257

Now torque that main cap to 80ftlbs.

Install your main cage or rib. Torque these nuts to 33 foot pounds. Install your oil pan. Reinstall the exhaust and fill the engine with your favorite flavor of motor oil and your good to go.

Note it is not required that you remove the transmission for this repair. I am rebuilding the transmission on this jeep as well. That its why it is down.
