Haha... yeah from what I've been reading, there's hope for those with the 93+ OBD1's. I've tried and tried and tried to find something for my '92 with no luck. Just a bunch of suggestions with dead end results.... and I really don't wanna fry my PCM trying things suggested without ACTUAL evidence of it working. If I had a spare PCM, it'd be a different story.
didn't they have a Police package? - seems like park ranger/rural Sheriff ... ?

No, I don't lick fish.
I'm pretty sure there was a police package with just about every year of XJ production. Not sure if the extended idle was included in that package or an option, but in theory it should be possible on any year XJ. Just gotta have someone with the know-how on EXACTLY how to go about it. I'm too chicken to try it on my '92 'cause I'm yet to find anyone who's successfully achieved it on that year.... if I had a spare PCM it would be a different story.

What's that, Bug?
Well, there goes that theory.
Hey.... maybe I'll luck out and find a PCM in a police packaged '92.
Yeah right.... it'll probably be sitting right next to the tire carrier I've been wanting.

Important Disclaimer...(kids don't try this at home) And I am not endorsing this idea at all. It is just a curious concept.
I haven't dug deep enough into into circuits yet, but I'm pretty sure there could be a way to also run it through a relay that cuts the juice to it and disables it when you step on the brake, this would make it a bit safer of course.

It looks like a mechanical "latching relay" can be used to control the on/off function to the solenoid. Meaning pressing a momentary switch will apply power to it where it remains a closed circuit until another power source is applied like from the brake light circuit to shut it off. Then it stays off until the first momentary switch is pressed again to turn it back on. Just like a cruise control does.

Sounds like a cool idea.... and useful at times... but will have to put that possible project on the shelf for a future rainy day.... too many other projects on the XJ to do first. lol.

If you have ever crawled along in first low for 5 miles or more at a time, something like this would be a great help. I have a hand cable on my 53 ****** and found it VERY useful and needed for this.

So a gazillion years later, it's nearly impossible to find a factory extended idles switch or the factory 4 switch bezel.
This guy did a writeup on how to get a factory-looking setup, complete with backlight illumination:

It's the second-most-expensive way to do it (after finding and paying for the unicorn OEM parts) but man it looks great. It has the added benefit of not being almost impossible.
Full disclosure: I designed the switch panel. If you buy one, you buy me a cup of coffee. I don't have anything to do with the switches, though.
