Durango Steering Box Swap. (Simplified)
 

I finnally found the time to put my Steering box in from a V8 Dodge Durango.

What you'll need:
13 mm Socket
15 mm Socket
16 mm Socket
5/8 line wrench
11/16 (I think) Line wrench
Big Pipe wrench / Monkey wrench
Pitman arm puller
Power steering fluid
Jack and Jackstands
A buddy to help ya

Just to clear sup some questions I had but I couldn't find a straight answer.
Yes the Steering box is a direct bolt in.
Yes the Pitman arm from your XJ will fit the durango steerin box.
Yes your power steering lines will fit in the durango steering bow.

To start.
Unbolt your swaybar from the unibody with a 15mm Socket (2 on each side)

Get your Big monkey wrench or Pipe wrench on the pitman arm bolt. or a 32 mm socket (either works)

after undoing the bolt get your Handy Dandy Pitman arm puller

and remove the pitman arm. (I got this one at autozone for $90 and returned it that day.)

Now undo your Power Steering Lines from the steering box (Pretty sure it's a 11/16 wrench)

Now undo the steering shaft bolt (13 mm) (You cant remove the shaft from the box yet.
97+ has Telescoping steering shaft
96 before has a solid steering shaft (Well at least mine did)

after removing the steering shaft bolt. time to undo the steering box bolts (3 16 mm bolts)

After that it should fall right out.

Now if your steering box spacer is broke I would recommend geeting one from the JY or buying a C-Rok spacer.

Mine was fine so I just reused it.

Now is the hard part. you get to shove the new box up in there while a friend holds it in place start the screw and make sure not to get them cross threaded.

after you get them started put your steering shaft back on and start the bolt into the shaft (dont torque yet)

now reconnect the Power steering lines

and put your pitman arm back on.

Now tighten everything
and start torqueing

Steering box bolt (Frame to box) 70 foot-pounds
Steering shaft bolt 36 foot-pounds
Pitman arm nut 60 foot-pounds
I'm not sure how to torque the powersteering lines? so I just got them tight...

After torqueing everything.

Jack the front axle up and put some Jack stands under them. Now put some power steering fluid in. put the cap back on and start it
Now turn the wheel "Lock to Lock" 20 time to work the air out. After doing this 20 times put some more power steering fluid in and go drive it around.

I did this Because mine was leaking very badly and it needed bearings. I also plan on running 35's later on so I figured why not.
