84 to 94 drivers side seat replacement
 

If your 84-94 XJ Cherokee drivers seat bottom has devoloped that annoying lean, don't worry it can be fixed easily and economically. All you need is the passenger side seat bottom from the junkyard. It does not matter if the interior color of the donor vehicle is different, this will explain how to change the cover as well. This is only for the 84-94 because the seat mounts and bases were changed in 95 and are non-interchangable. This is a one man, 2 tool, less than one hour task.

Parts needed: passenger side seat bottom from the junkyard. I say passenger side as they tend to see less miles than the drivers side and will be in better shape.

Tools required: 13mm socket or wrench, and a phillips screwdirver.

First to remove the seat bottom from the seat mount, there are 4 13mm bolts. 2 in front and 2 in the back of the base. Slide the seat all the way back to gain better access to the rear bolts and undo the elastic retaining strap.

Now remove the two bolts on the rear of the seat base.

Now slide the seat all the forward to access the front bolts and remove those.

The seat base will now easily pull out. Next step is to remove the 8 screws that secure the seat bottom cover to the base.

Once the screws are removed the cover can be removed. Use caution when doing this as the cover is also secured by velcro strips that are glued to the seat foam. Use one hand to hold the velcro strip while pulling the seat cover with the other. This will prevent the velcro strip from ripping off of the seat foam.

Now complete the same steps to remove the cover from the donor seat btoom. Replace that cover with your stock cover and reinstall the 8 screws that retain the seat cover to the base. This would also be a great time the give your seat cover a good cleaning if it is stained.

This pic shows the difference it the seat bottoms after the cover is reinstall. You can see that the right side of the uncovered seat is considerably lower than the recovered seat.

Looking at the bottom of the seat pan shows the reason that these seats develop this problem. The pan is formed from a very thin alloy that will crack over time from the owner climbimg in and out of the vehicle and placing all their body weight on that particular corner of the seat. These cracks will quickly devolop into a large break and continue to seperate.
