Won't accelerate over 60
I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee, auto, diesel, 3 liter, 100,000k. Having an intermittent problem with the acceleration. At times I can only reach 60, even if I press accelerator all the way to the floor. A throttle light does come on the panel. I have taken it in twice, they can't find anything wrong. ??? Just took it in again, now I'm being told it's the turbo and it's going to cost $8500.00 to fix!!
Does this sound right? I live in a small town and to take it for a second opinion will mean a day spent driving and waiting. Anyone????????

If they can't find anything wrong why do they say it's the turbo? There could be an electrical issue with the turbo causing an intermittent failure. 8500 is near the cost of a whole 3.0. Is there a check engine light (CEL)? Without more info the only advice can be to get more information. Is this new to you or have you had it for its whole life. A second opinion would be a good idea.

They sure its the turbo itself? You can confirm yourself, is there any play in the compressor wheel? There should be a nut in the center, should be able to see it if you take off the inlet tube. If yoh grab that nut and there is any in/out play, or excessive side to side play, its bearings are going.
Lots of times a boost leak will mimic signs of a failing or failed turbo.
A boost leak tester can be made for like $20 and some time...
