why am i getting bad gas mileage??!!

whats up guys

so heres the thing i drive a 205 jeep grand cherokee 5.7 v8 hemi, and lately ive been gettin 9 mpg....last month i was gettin 13.5 mpg. is this because of a specific reason? will getting a cold air intake bring up the gas mileage?? if so what would be the best one and why??

thanks much

This is the "cherokee" section not the "grand Cherokee" section, that is one click below cherokee tech....just saying.......but yes a CAI will do better mpg for any car. not much, maybe 1, 2, 3, mpg......

Or you could figure out why you dropped 4 MPG and fix the problem

x2..
Instead of throwing parts at it, find your problem and fix it right.
It would also help if you posted this in the right area, Maybe a mod can move it for you..

x2 Don't throw parts at it, run a few tests and see why it's doing so bad. Could be O2 sensors or a number of other things. And a CAI will technically raise MPGs, but that's only if you can lay off the skinny pedal! When I put mine on, all I did was floor it because it sounded cool, haha.

A CAI will not get you anywhere close to 1, 2 or 3 MPG boost. The best modification for improved fuel economy continues to be the driver modification or an egg on the dash. I have no idea where you live, but cold weather could play a part in it too.

So robertJ your telling me that there is no chance that when i put a CAI on my jeep that i will even remotely get 1mpg better??? are you joking me? The stock filter box on the jeep was so restricted it wasn't even funny, i put a K&N CAI on there and it breathed a whole lot better, so im pretty sure im getting at least 1mpg or better. Nowhere near 1 mpg boost......how do u figure?

Mike1998XJ 01-04-2010 10:10 PM

Mike mike is right. if you've dropped that much mpg in a short period of time you have a problem you need to locate and fix.
Don't worry about the filter now...

you drive a jeep that is why plus it has a hemi in it no wonder why you are getting bad gas milage

So ideally an engine maintains a air to fuel ratio of 14.7:1 and you're telling us that if you allow more air to come in you get better gas mileage?:brickwall:
To each there own:dunno:

I'm not so sure if a buying a CAI would help you solve your problem...
For me MPG depends on how you drive and how heavy your loads are...

robertj 01-05-2010 07:38 AM

The only reason people get better fuel economy after installing a CAI is because they start driving to get better MPG. As Metlic says, the engine's computer adjust for a certain A:F ratio regardless of what air intake system you have. It's a common myth and marketing ploy by the manufacturers to make you think otherwise. If it makes you feel better about your purchase though, more power to you.

My best advice to you sir would be to do a general tune up. If its around time for plugs air filter fuel filter plug wires ect... Change them. If it doesnt solve or help the situation and if you dont figure its your driving habits driving
more in 4wd or any other thing of that sort that may vary from time to time then you can most likely figure on it being something else starting to go.

Also check your tire pressure....not saying that one of these things could cause that big of a drop but a combination of them sure could

Metlic53 01-05-2010 10:46 PM

ok......i guess i just would like to think im getting better mpg......maybe it gives a little little more power sometimes.......

Metlic53 01-05-2010 10:49 PM

i only spent 50 bucks on my k&n CAI so oh well. it looks better and sounds cooler anyways.......oh well....
