Where Is This Part and How Many Are There?
 

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that has dying issues. Check engine light is giving off code that the jeep is having multiple missfires and saying it is cylinder 5. They suggested I swap cyclinder 5 with 3 and let them clear the code. Then if it read cyclinder 3 I know I need to replace the ignition coil. But....where are they? I have googled and been on youtube and still do not have a clue. Just closed the hood because I can't find them.

I have had the following replaced: crankshaft, camshaft, new battery, two tune ups(one by Jeep), rotor and cap, had Jeep clean throttle body, and reprogram the computer(due to a recall) I am $600 in the hole and still have a jeep that is dying with not warning. Please help so I can try this out. Thanks

The ignition coil if you look at the distributor cap if it s a 6 cylinder in the middle of the cap theres a wire trace that wire it goes about 3 inches down and it plugs into a black 2x2 looking box thats the coil its bolted to the block http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/ge...nited/c506.jpg

Also, just looked under hood. I was on passager side and to the left of the cap(where the spark plugs plug into right?) a wire traces down to one thing. Is that the coil? I am sorry. I know this must be frustrating, but this is my transportation and I have to fix it. Lol. I know my descriptions are not the best. Thanks again for your time

Yes passenger side thats the coil it unbolts easily theyre cheap too

What did she mean by swap cylinder 5 and 3
 

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. She lead me to believe there were 6 individual ignition coils. Do you maybe know what she meant by swapping cylinder 5 and 3? She told me it didn't involve swapping my spark plug wires.

Vicmartin, That is the purpose and the value of this forum, to help others and for free! Glad to hear that you were able to identify the part yourself. It is a gratifying thing to learn to be self sufficient.

The later Jeeps with the 6 cylinder engines, had 3 small coils in a single unit mounted atop the spark plugs. You dont have this setup. You have the round distributor with seven wires coming out of it, 6 wires around the perimeter of the black cap and 1 wire in the center. As Purple XJ pointed out to you that the one in the center goes to the coil. All other wires go to the spark plugs in the cylinder head. Now that you know, you can change the spark plugs your self in the future. Just do one at a time.
