What's your Gas Mileage

Hey guys new to the site here. I am in the market for a 96-98 Grand cherokee limited with the 4.0 inline 6 engine. But just recently I came across the 5.9 limited. I was wondering what do you guys get as gas mileage on the 5.9 city/highway/mixed. My commute is about 40miles a day total with about half just freeway and the other half stop lights. Or if I go for the inline 6 because I heard they are more reliable and average about 18mpg with mixed driving. Please let me know what the real world gas mileage you guys are getting and which one would you go for the 5.9 or the inline 6.

Thanks

I would guess that the 5.9 would avaerage about 15mpg if you'r easy on the loud pedal.

Damn that's better then my stock 4.0. Of course I'm sure the cracked exhaust mani has something to do with that.

I have a 98 zj 4.0. My mpg highway is around 33. City between 13 and 22. If i punch it through the gears its gone down to 5. The inline 6 is best at a sustained rpm.

Yes thats with shell vpower. Its more money but i get another week on tank. And 33 is at a sustained speed. Seems to have the best milage at about 55 mph When its running 2000 rpm. Drops to 26 when i accelerate to 65.

How the hell are you calculating your MPGs. I think you might be doing it wrong. Not certain, but numbers
I,e that are a little 'to good to be true'.

It took a perfectly flat and straight interstate with pure highway miles to achieve 41mpgs out of a 2012 Ford Focus!

My cherokee is only managing ~10mpg conservative city errand runs. Highway miles topped out at 17mpg in perfect scenerio guise. I don't drive it often though. If no big trips are driven, I might undercut 6,000 miles for 12 months

Just going by the overhead readout

That is your issue, that is not a real reflection of mpg. Older computers were notoriousfor this.

If your gettin 33 mpg then im obama. Fill your tank reset your trip. Then next time you fill up divide your miles on your trip by the gallons you've added to fill back up. Youll be let down just saying in advance.

the best I got on my 4.0 5spd was 21 all hwy. that was keeping it around or under 70. That was tuned up with new cap, plugs and rotor.

I have a 93zj and I get about 21mpg mixed. I'm driving about 80 miles round trip highway and stop and go. 33mpg is not realistic, its not happening. I have an 02 neon that doesn't even get that lol. Average is about 20-22mpg with everyone I know with stock jeeps.

I get 33 to 35 in my wife's Kia Spectra if I drive it nice. No way 33mpg is possible in a heavy brick with a 4.0. If you got 33mpg on a complete 23 gallon tank of fuel, you would get 759 miles on one tank. Not happening.

I have a 96 zj with a 5.2. Get around 14 in town and 20 on the highway. Thats a couple mpgs better than I used to get before switching to ethanol free gas.

dave1123 Sep 22, 2012 10:54 AM

Realisticly, you can't expect 33 mpg with ANY 4X4. I just ain't gonna happen! My 97 ZJ 4.0 got me about 17 highway and 13 around town. When I delivered newspapers, mailbox to mailbox, I got around 12.

You've got to remember, you've got a lot of rolling resistance with all those moving parts weither they're under power or not.

Ethanol fuels are purely political! They are supposed to save in imported oil, but in reality they produce less mpg so you have to buy more! Does anybody else smell a dead rat?
