Default Whats needed for a 5.2 to 5.9 swap?

I am picking up a 97 GC today. It has a 318 in it, guy ran it hot and im just going to put another motor in it. I have located several 5.2 magnums locally. I would like to know what is needed if I decide to go with a 360 instead? Does it only involve a Computer change? or is there more needed? Im pulling the engine anyway so why not go with the bigger.

I don't think you even need the computer change. You will need a different tC I believe. At least you always had to before, the 318 are internally balanced and the 360 were not. So you needed a tc with a weight on it. Now I know the magnum 360 was running a different harmonic balancer then the old engines so maybe the tc conversion is a mute point now. A trip the the tranny shop will tell you that. Also the 318 and 360 used different motor mounts, you could interchange but need to use spacers. Best if can get the right ones with the 360.

Found a motor today out of a 2000 Durango 5.9.. Ill get the mounts. Found out the computers are the same and the manifolds also. The TC are the same also, just the 5.9 uses a plate on the flywheel for the Crankshaft sensor. Looks like im good to go. I should have time in the next two weeks to get this going. So now I will have a 97 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited

Dude, that's awesome. I have a 94 and have always had this swap in the back of my mind. I'm pretty sure that JP mag did that swap, back when Pe'we' was there. Heck it could have been when Pe'we' had his first stint at Petersen's. I don't know now. Wish I had that article. I thought the injectors would be different. Seems to me that something would be different, i.e; injectors or computer. More fuel needs to get in the cylinders, doesn't it?? Keep us posted

Will do, Im getting the 5.9 complete so the injectors will be correct. From what I have found so far they do use the same injectors and electrics though. The 5.9 has more compression I believe. It will run like the durangos but not like the Jeep GC Limited. I will have to find a GC limited PCM to get the performance. Its PCM advances the timing 15deg to give it more power, but you must run premium fuel only. Ill keep this updated and get some pics of the swap up.

I believe I would stay with the Durango PCM so I wouldn't need to run premium fuel.

check the durango mothor, I know on later models some of the durangos used different number of teeth on the tone ring for teh crankshaft position sensor. that would confuse the jeep PCM.

Will do, do you know how many teeth it should have? I may need to get the Durango PCM then?

Hey how has the swap gone? Question for anyone willing to answer. What about a Mopar "juiced" 360 that they sell aftermarket? I'm pulling numbers out of my@.. but the 360s with 340HP or 380HP. Thanks for the input.

I have the motor sitting on the stand. I just havent had time to start the swap yet. I just finished putting a timing belt in a Toyota MR2 yesterday and have a Hyundia Santa Fe lined up for a timing belt now. Ill get to the jeep in a week or two. Ill take some pictures of the swap.

To avoid problems stick with the "Magnum" style engines and you'll have fewer issues. To see some toys go on here, scroll down, on the lower right. Check out the 406 stroker. 435 HP 470 lb.ft. of torque for $6,495. That's a steal. http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/cratemotor.html

Help me understand, 360 c.i., 390HP for 10k and a 406c.i., 435 HP for 6.5k? Some kind of typo? 402 c.i. next to it was 14k. I put it in my cart and it was still $6300. Should have gone to checkout!

It's not a typo. Mancini's makes those kinds of deals all the time!
I tried to put their logo in my sig. but had to settle for that link thing.

I started the swap today, got the 5.2 out and the 5.9 is ready to be set in. Ill get it bolted up tomorrow. Everything is looking good so far. I had to remove alot of emission EGR stuff since my Jeep didnt have that stuff and the 5.9 does. Its out of a Church Van, motormounts are different also. My new ones will be in tomorrow morning. Ill take my camera with me tomorrow and get a few pics.

Nice sig. ol,blue, I used to have an 85 GLH. Fun cars..
