I dont feel that running the transmission dry is a good idea, most pumps dont like to be run dry. The best way is to find a lube tech who isnt a hack, and have them hook it to the tranny flush machine, which will cycle all the fluid out, including whats in the convertor, replacing it with new fluid. It use to be about 75$. Not sure what it costs now.

first of all, absolutely do not drive it unless you have to. Meaning, to get fixed. trans fluid runs hot, the water boils and steams the firction lining right off the clutch plates. Among other things.
at home you can remove your cooler return line and put it in a bucket, but you have to have way to refil the trans pretty fast while doing this. if you can get a fluid pump, you can hook it to the return on the trans and pump it back in.

Any dealership can do it for about $125.00. Ash them NOT to put any additives in it, just exchange the fluid.

hooking the trans up to the flushing machine puts alot of stress on the trans!!.... not a great idea.... un hook lines put in neutral start and run it till it stops pumping out fluid shut it off as soon as flow stops...CHANGE THE TRANS FILTER.... fill it run it for a couple days and then pump it dry again and re fill with fresh fluid...

i already got it professionaly pumped, but since i plan on pulling the motor and rebuilding it i dont want to bolt it back up to a tranny that could be shot, so i guess im going to get the tranny rebuilt, just to be safe

You have the 6cyl zj? 42RE?

I have a fully rebuilt one that I did. They are pretty easy. Lots of snap ring and clutch plated. Hardest part was getting the OD unit to align on the rest of the trans, but I bought the special tool to do it with.
