Weird electrical problem
Hello! I'm new here, found this site through a Google search. I've got a question that I'm hoping you guys can answer. I think I know the answer, but I wanted to confirm with others more knowledgeable than I.
In the last couple of weeks I've had a strange problem with the dash electrics. I think I've got a bad blower motor resistor, but I'm not sure. When I'm driving down the road, with the heater on (no matter what setting, but mostly notice the problem on high), all of a sudden all the dash electrics except the radio will shut off. The gauges, blower, dash lights, everything shuts off. Then, if I turn the heater selector switch (the one on the right) to OFF, the gauges reset and everything comes back on. I thought that was it, but I've also had the problem at night and discovered that it shuts the headlights down also. Once the headlights shut down, I usually have to restart the engine to get things back on.
At first I thought I had a problem with the alternator not putting out enough amps. I also thought Autozone confirmed this when they tested the alternator at 53 A and it should be 106 A. Unfortunately, replacing the alternator didn't fix the problem. When I took back the core, I asked Autozone what they thought. Another customer in the store happened to be a Jeep owner and said it sounded like a blower motor resistor. Would you guys agree?
Next question, I've got a brand new blower motor resistor in my hands, where does it go?

not sure about the location on the resistor, but i highly doubt that is your problem. i would check all grounds to make sure they have a good tight, and clean connection. the dash wiring in that location is where i had the shorts in the speakers on mine, but its hard to locate all the wires under there without taking the dash apart.

Have you checked the QD's(quick disconnects, the ones with the plastic locks) on the wire bundles. Sometimes those things back out and visually they look installed but vibrations cause them to have loose connections.Check that heater switch too might have a short. Is it the slider type selector or the rotary type switche(s) on the control?
