Question V8 tranny in a 6 GC?

There is someone who has a low mileage AT that was behind the V8 in 1998 and I'd like to know if it would work in my 98 GC with the 4.0?

Thank you so much.

X2. The V8 and straight 6 have a different bolt mounting pattern.
And Welcome to CF.

Well, I know that after 94 they switch to the POS Chrysler 42RE for the 4.0L
So probably not compatible since the others used 46rh/46RE/44RE

Not without an adapter plate. The I6 uses the old AMC I6/V8 bellhousing pattern, and the V8 used in the ZJ (318/360ci) uses the Chrysler LA-Block (LA238 V6, LA273/318/360 V8, and LA488/515 V10 engines.)

I'm sure it can be done - I just don't know where to find the adapter plate offhand. Probably start with either Advance Adapters or Novak Conversions (www.novak-adapt.com, I think, and AA should turn up with some Google work.)

Well sure you can always build (or buy apparently) an adapter but your going into a whole new set of issues when you do. First and foremost that (and maybe I'm wrong) the 6cyl trans is not up to the daily task of the V8. Its not built for that kind of power or torque.

I wouldn't put a 42RE behind a V8, but I don't see any trouble with putting a 46RE behind the 6-242 - which is what he's planning on doing.

It would probably be easier to find an adapter plate for a GM slushbox (like, say, a 4L80 w/GM V8 bellhousing pattern...) but the 46RE behind the 6-242 is perfectly doable, if the mechanics can be hammered out.

Is there a better, more durable transmission for the 6 cylinder Jeep? That does not cause a whole lot of fabrication to make work.
