V8 or not?
I just purchased a GC for my wife. While looking for it I was finding so many older ones for very little cash. I have been kinda wanting a quad but I think a small 4X4 would actaully suit better for my needs. A bit of fishing and hunting, a little off roading with something I dn't care if it gets scratched.
Well should I be looking at the V8s? I am thinking they are going to be heavier. And with low range in a 6 these things may have enough power to go places. One thing with a 5.2 or 5.9 they are a dime a dozen and don't break often. I have lots of them. How about tranny problems? Anything to watch for. Most of the ones I am looking at have fairly high milage as least in the eyes of market. Looks like a fun toy to purchase for not that much cash, and then its ticker time.

The difference in fuel economy is quite minimal between most V6 and V8 Grands from my experience. (The 5.9L being the exception) If that is the only reason you are interested in the smaller engine, I'd reconsider. The 4.0L is alot more prone to overheating problems compared to the V8's, and the extra 'grunt' is nice to have when you want it...

+1 on the last post. I own a 1999 GC with a 4.0 and a 2004 GC Limited with the small v-8 and the mileage is nearly identical. The only time the 8 cyl fails mileage-wise is when you put your foot down, which is hard to resist at times. Both these vehicles have the QuadraTrac FT AWD. I did find the 4.0 works better in the ice / snow since it's not as easy to add too much power and spin the tires. Just my $0.02

Milage is not an issue. finding a vehicle like this is for fun only. My wife does not want me to mod hers at all, and I really could not get myself to run it through some of scratchy brush I hunt in at times. I had just heard that the inline 6 has good torque and may be enough, although I am not even sure if it came out in the older gc that I am looking at. Mostly I am finding 5.2 and some 5.9s. my favorite engine is the 5.2

All year ZJ's from '93-'98 can be had with the 4.0L They seem harder and harder to find, which is funny cause the 5.2L ones get better gas mileage..

Well I just find it amazing how you get these vehicles so inexpensively. Although the best deals I find are 6hrs north in Edmonton, there is a lot of them for under 3 grand. I was at first thinking I would have to spend 7 but for 7g I can get one as nice as my wifes only has many more miles on it. The more I think of it the more I am setting myself to get one with a 5.2. It will be the V8. I think the extra power will be better then the small amount of weight saved.

Where abouts are you, Lethbridge? If so, you'd be better off looking in a place like Cranbrook...BC vehicles usually come with more of a accident history then Alberta cars...And Cranbrook is probably a quicker drive...

I was up in Winnipeg earlier this summer and there seemed to be a LOT of used car lots with early 90's GC. That is one cold corner of the universe in January though.

I found one right here in town. Picked up a 93 with a 5.2 fully loaded with leather for 3500. Drives as nice as my wifes 04. Tranny is not quite a cool. Anyway now its time to start threads on high of a lift I can put on without major costs to get some better tires under it.

Sorry to hear that....I was born in Winnipeg...Lived in St. James. Left and never looked back! But then again, it also got pretty frickin' chilly living in Cold Lake, Alberta too....Vancouver weather never really gets that cold though!

well that was a good find. that leaves lots of room for fixing and modding. I never seem to find those good deals, but then I am kinda an impulse buyer and not very patient.
